Stephen Eddy Obituary

Stephen D. Eddy Sr., 70, of Rutland, died suddenly August 31, 2010, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center. He was born February 3, 1940, in Rutland, Vt., the son of Thomas W. and Charlotte M. (Smith) Eddy Sr.

He graduated from Rutland High School in 1957 and attended the University of Vermont.

Steve had an early career as a publisher's representative at Time-Life, and later opened Book King in 1971. He was a member of the downtown business community until 2009, when he sold his bookstore. He will be fondly remembered by his many loyal customers for his winsome smile, wonderful sense of humor and his dry wit.

He was a member of the American Booksellers Association for many years.

Steve had an enormous love of Vermont, especially the Rutland community. He was passionate about localism and building downtown and as a bookstore owner had a committed following of customers. In 38 years of business, he and longtime employee Joanne Johnston sustained the literary needs of the area residents in providing not only books but poetry readings, children's story times and other programs. He served on the Board of Directors for the Rutland Redevelopment Authority and the Rutland Area Farm to Food Link and, as a part of that organization, he was active in the Grow a Row program, which provides fresh produce to area nonprofits. He served on many committees for the Downtown Partnership, and served as a Rutland Free Library trustee for five and a half years and, for the past six years, he served on the executive committee for the library's fundraisers. He was a volunteer for the Vermont State Guardian Ad Litem program, as an advocate for the needs of children in the court system.

Steve was very active throughout his life and was an avid runner. He also enjoyed playing volleyball in various leagues throughout the region and, in recent years, prided himself on competing against players who were half his age. He was an outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing, never missing an opening day.

Steve was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Nancy (Cook) Eddy of Rutland; his four children, Stephen D. Eddy Jr. and wife Nancy and their daughter Amaya and stepson Luke Hartson of Trenton, Maine, Lauren Eddy Oberg and husband Chris and their children Emily and Christopher of Rutland, Nathaniel J. Eddy and fiancée Sue Eggen of Philadelphia, Pa., and stepson Gregory E. Durgin of Belmont, Vt.; his sister, Charlene Eaton and husband George Skovira of Rutland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Thomas W. Eddy Jr.; and an infant daughter, Ann Marie Eddy.

The celebration of life will be held Friday, September 3, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Paramount Theatre, 30 Center St., Rutland, Vt.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Paramount Theatre, 30 Center St., Rutland, VT 05701; the Rutland Community Cupboard, 191 Columbian Ave., Rutland, VT 05701; or to a charity of one's choice.

Tossing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dear Nancy, Nate & family,
We thought the world of our new friend Steve who welcomed us to Rutland at his Book King some years ago. He took an immediate interest in us and our civil union. Steve had a warm, welcoming way with an inviting smile and kind words assuring us that we would enjoy living in HIS fine city!
Steve left us way too soon. We only wish that we could have had that last cup of coffee and chat with him at Cafe Terra together to say farewell, until we meet again. We would have told him thanks for all the great memories in such a short time and for being our good friend and neighbor. We will always remember Steve's caring embrace that made us feel right at home here in his proud city of Rutland.
Our thoughts are with you Nancy, as well as with the family Steve was so proud of at any time.
We are here for you now, as Steve was there for us.

Dear Nancy and family,
I was so sorry to learn of Steve's death. I loved going into Book King and interacting with him. He always had a kind word, an interesting observation or a funny comment, and would always ask about the kids I was teaching. When the store closed, I missed seeing him and Joanne. They were always so helpful and caring. Please tell Emily Oberg that I am thinking of her with the loss of her grandfather. I taught Emily at the middle school and think of her fondly. You are all in my prayers.
Take care and God bless, Laura Foley

To the Eddys and to Rutland: I was a 1957 RHS classmate of Steve's, 'Flip', to us then. I remember him as a happy, laughing, joking, very independent young man of our high school days, one who was captivating in outlook and humor. I wish I had known him better as an adult. His contribution to his home town was enormous.

Nancy and the entire Eddy family: I could write here for an hour about Steve. He was one of the most wonderful, genuine human beings I've ever known. I feel honored in my life to have him as both a friend and a classmate (RHS, 1957). I saw him whenever I returned to Rutland during the summer and I still remember all of the times we met and talked. Steve's humor and great attitude, his enormous contributions to Rutland and to the lives of everyone around him, will be lasting memories and inspirations.

I share your sorrow deeply.

Dear Nancy and family
I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I knew Steve through volleyball. And he always did keep up with the youngest on the court. You always saw Steve giving 110% and everytime he hit the floor diving for a ball, the sound of Steve hitting the floor made you think he wasn't going to make it upright - but he always did. He always had a smile, always so positive and I always felt he had a real love for life. He will be missed. May God grant you peace for you and yours.

Remebering our many conversations at the bookstore. Steve always wanted to talk about books, and was unfailingly willing to search the store for the right book for the right child or adult. Saw him most recently at the RAFFL Summit when he talked about his work as Guardian Ad Litum. Urged me to get involved. We will miss him very much and our thoughts go out to his family and many friends.

My condolences, Nancy and family. Steve was as nice and genuine a human being as anyone could ever hope to meet.

What the obituary doesn't mention is that Steve was a member for 27 years of Vermont's first fantasy baseball league, The Green Mountain Rotisserie League. What it also doesn't mention is that Steve achieved the extremely rare feat of winning one season without making a single transaction, but carrying his opening day roster through to October. Some would say it couldn't be done, but Steve did it.
