Karen BYE Obituary

BYE, Karen Hanson
Passed away on December 5, 2010. She was born on January 31, 1931 in Oakland, CA to Fred and Muriel Hanson. Karen was raised in Auburn, attended local schools and graduated from Placer High School in 1948. She attended Point Loma College in Pasadena and graduated from Sacramento State College. Soon thereafter she began a teaching career that sustained her throughout her entire working life. In 1953 she married Richard Bethell and they moved to Placerville and raised their 2 children, Jeff and Janet. Jeff now lives in Chico with his wife Cindi and their 3 children. Karen's daughter Janet lived in Pollock Pines until her death in June 2010. In 1978 Karen married Grant (Jay) Bye, Jr. of Camino; it was a second marriage for both and a match made in heaven, or at least pretty darned close. They spent their years together working, traveling and enjoying life. They made trips back East to visit with Jay's children and grandchildren in Nova Scotia, Maine and Florida. They also enjoyed traveling to Bodega Bay on the California coast as well as Mexico and Hawaii. When at home they spent many an evening on their deck under the pines and cedars, overlooking Camino. Karen always enjoyed a cold drink and a good laugh. Over the years Karen taught at schools in the Elk Grove, Davis, Camino, Silver Fork, Mother Lode and Buckeye School districts. Later she helped develop school curriculum and was a consultant for State Department of Education. Retiring in 1991, Karen was recognized by a California Legislative Assembly Resolution commending her dedication to children and her 30+ years in education. Even in retirement she found a way to work with kids. Judge Patrick Riley enlisted Karen's help to start the local chapter of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) an organization that assists children in legal proceedings. She will be missed by her devoted husband Jay, son Jeff, stepson Grant Bye III, stepdaughters Jean DiMarco and Judy Lish, extended family and her many, many friends in the Placerville/Auburn area.

A memorial service will be scheduled and announced at a later date.
