Nancy Brooks
November 12, 1938 - March 4, 2021
Elk Grove, California - Nancy Brooks, wife, mother, daughter and much else, died peacefully in her home in Elk Grove on March 4. She was 82. She is survived by her sons Christopher of Elk Grove and Theodore of Novato CA.
She was born in Stockton CA on November 12, 1938. She grew up on the farm of her parents, Giovanni and Mary Rose Oneto. As a young girl, she was distinguished member of 4H, winning a number of prizes and awards for her special exhibits and projects. She graduated from Lodi High in 1956 and attended UC Davis.
She was married for 56 years to the love of her life, Harold Brooks. They were virtually inseparable. Aside from her two sons, she was deeply attached to her Springer Spaniel, James. She called him "Chief Yellow Eyes". She also leaves behind many family members.
She was involved in Beeline and later worked in payroll/bookkeeping at a variety of locations in Stockton and Lodi. Before retiring, she served as Payroll Supervisor at St Joseph's Medical Center. She executed an unheralded job efficiently and made sure frontline staff were paid correctly.
Her commitment to children was demonstrated in many ways. She served as a Cub Scout Den mother for both her sons. In retirement, she became a prolific maker of quilts for "Quilts for Kids" in Sacramento. She was a top quiltmaker for many years until poor health forced her to stop in summer 2020.
She loved to travel, went to China, Australia, New Zealand and cruised the Caribbean and the Rhine River. She also visited Italy (where she had family) the United Kingdom and much of Western and Central Europe. She also saw the Berlin Wall before it was completely removed.
She was a great cook, loved to cook and inspired her sons not to be afraid of the kitchen. She was renowned for her tacos, lasagna and horta meatloaf.
Her simple white beans and ground pork skillet fed a hungry family on many weeknights.
When she retired, she loved to stroll the neighborhood with Harold. They made many friends on these walks and were known and loved by many of their fellow strollers.
She was a sweet and kind heart. She will missed by all who knew her as a loving soul. She certainly will be missed by those who knew and loved her best.
Nancy will be interred at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon CA with Harold. They will meet again.
