Carl Tee Duncan

Mr. Carl Tee Duncan, aged 78, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at Iredell Memorial Hospital, after a period of declining health. Tee, as he was affectionately known by his close friends and family, was born on March 14, 1945, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to the late Joseph Cottene Duncan and Aileene Wade Duncan.

In his formative years, Tee received his education in Spindale, NC, and Lumberton, NC, culminating in his graduation from J. H. Hayswood School in 1962. He proudly graduated from Livingstone College in 1966 and often fondly recalled his time “beneath thy maples and thy oaks” where he met his beloved wife, Phyllis, and became a legacy member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.

Following his college years, Tee and Phyllis relocated their young family to Raeford, NC, where they built lasting friendships that felt like family. It was during this time that Tee discovered his passion for working with young people while employed at McCain Training School. Seeking new opportunities, Tee and his family moved to Statesville, NC, in 1974, where he began a career as a Juvenile Probation Officer. He later earned his Master's Degree from Appalachian State University. In 2006, Tee retired from the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice as the Chief Juvenile Court Counselor for the 22nd Judicial District. In recognition of his dedicated service to the state of North Carolina, former Governor Michael Easley honored Tee with membership in the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine Society in April 2007.

Tee had a deep love for his family and cherished his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to spending quality time with his loved ones, Tee was an enthusiast of classic cars. Yet, this was only one of his many passions. He also found joy in creating computer graphic designs, attending his high school and college homecomings, socializing with friends at Joe Phifer's on Friday nights, hanging out with the guys at WG's Auto Care, enjoying Johnny Walker Black Scotch, and savoring his Winston 100s. Over the years, Tee actively participated in numerous organizations, including The Lions Club of Statesville, the Elk's Lodge, The Owls and Owlettes social club, and The Upsilon Beta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He was also a life member and former Treasurer of the Livingstone College National Alumni Association.

Tee took immense pride in his family, particularly his grandchildren, and he leaves behind a rich legacy that will forever be cherished. He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Chunn Duncan, of the family home; three sons, Gary (Raeshay) Duncan of Virginia Beach, VA, Bryan (Pam) Duncan of Salisbury, NC, and Joseph Duncan of Salisbury, NC; grandchildren, Darius Duncan of Charlotte, NC, Kalil (Taylor) Duncan of Raleigh, NC, and Haley Duncan of Norfolk, VA; sisters-in-law, Barbara Chunn Brown of Greensboro, NC, and Zettie Chunn Phillips of Charlotte, NC; special cousins Edwina Bullock-Garrett of Rocky Mount, NC, and Joan Duncan of Norwalk, Connecticut; close college classmates, Dr. Dorothy Colson of Greensboro, NC, Dr. Mary Ann Ponds of Granite Quarry, NC, and Patricia Jones Ricks of Salisbury, NC; close high school friend, Thomasina Jefferson of Lumberton, NC; close family friends Neal and Jan Sinclair of Wendell, NC and Robert “Redd” and Mary “Plass” Singletary of Raeford, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Mr. Carl Tee Duncan's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His contributions to his community, his dedication to his family, and his warm and welcoming spirit will be remembered with gratitude and affection.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Rutledge and Bigham Mortuary at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
