Robert 'Bob' Gobbel

SPENCER - Robert Alexander "Bob" Gobbel, age 88, of Spencer, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Bob was born July 27, 1925, in Spencer, the son of the late Carl G. Gobbel and Ethel Lanning Gobbel. Mr. Gobbel was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1943 until 1946 in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Gobbel retired from Norfolk Southern Railway after 34 years of service and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Spencer and was a member of the Men's Bible Class. Mr. Gobbel was a Meals on Wheels volunteer.

He enjoyed traveling and visiting with his friends at Sim's in Spencer.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Gobbel was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Gobbel.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jo Ann C. Gobbel, who he married October 1949; sons Jim Gobbel (Marla) and Stan Gobbel of Spencer; daughter Tricia Finney (Chris) of Savannah, Ga.; two sisters, Peg G. Henderson (Maurice) of Farragut, Tenn., and Patricia G. Monroe of Spencer; grandsons Michael and Jamie Gobbel; and great-grandsons Parker, Drew and Alex Gobbel.

Visitation: 11-12 Noon Monday, June 2 at Summersett Funeral Home.

Service: 12 Noon at Summersett Memorial Chapel conducted by Rev. Franklin Myers with burial to follow at Rowan Memorial Park.
