David C.T. Shang
of Raleigh, N.C.David C.T. Shang of Raleigh, N.C., passed away on December 15th at home, after a long battle with cancer. He was born April 16, 1922 in Taiyuan, China, son of the late General Shang Xue-Chin and his wife, Pay-Jing Dung. Mr. Shang graduated from Ming Hsien Oberlin-Shansi Memorial High School in China and received his BA in Philosophy from National Central University in 1945. He came to the United States in 1950 on a fellowship from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, to pursue his Master's Degree in Philosophy. In 1953, he received his MA in Public Administration from Columbia University, and in 1961, a MS Degree in Chemistry from Brooklyn College. He worked for over 20 years at IBM Corporation in materials research and development and is the holder of 10 U.S. patents and numerous publications. He was also a member of the Owego United Methodist Church for over 35 years. In his retirement, he spent winters in Vero Beach, Fla., worked on his extensive library and never lost his love for the written word, oriental antiques, classical music and the occasional ocean cruise. Mr. Shang is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Renate, Raleigh, N.C.; five sons, Moses and wife, Catherine, Chicago, Paul and wife, Choi-Yee, Chicago, Allan and wife, Kimberly, Wake Forest, N.C., Bryan and wife, Sheila, Raleigh, N.C., Warren and wife, Cynthia, Chantilly, Va.; grandchildren, Michelle, David, Alexa, Aaron and Mia. Further survivors include his stepmother, five sisters, two brothers and many nieces and nephews.
