Douglas Smoot Obituary

Douglas Nibley Smoot

1950 - 2022

Douglas Nibley Smoot, 72, died in his Salt Lake City home on October 2, 2022 of heart disease. Born April 26, 1950 to Anne Odell Kirtley and Harold Nibley Smoot he spent most of his life in the Salt Lake area. He attended Highland High School and the University of Utah, graduating with a degree in Business Management. He married Kim Krahenbuhl in 1983 and relocated to the Dallas area with stepson Christian to pursue an opportunity in the Food and Beverage industry. After a major promotion, he moved the family to New Orleans for several years, eventually returning to his Utah roots to be close to family. When the marriage ended, he remained in Utah and worked in several sales positions before his retirement in 2015.

He is remembered as a kindhearted and generous man with a fun-loving side. He loved the outdoors, spending time in Brighton and the local mountains, enjoying cross country skiing, hiking, and fishing. Throughout his life he had a wide variety of hobbies and interests – tennis, motorcycles, gardening, favorite TV programs – and a recent passion for golf. A devoted dog owner, he loved his three Schnauzers and spent many happy hours with them. He was a regular volunteer at the local soup kitchen, serving meals at Thanksgiving for the last twenty years. He was a generous supporter of charities and non-profits, including the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Humane Society of Utah, and the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake. He spent many hours gardening and doing maintenance work at the Episcopal Church he had grown up in. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.

Doug is survived by his brother, Kirt Smoot (Seal Beach, CA) half-sisters Kelley (San Marcos, TX), Carey (Azores), cousins Diana (NYC), Martha (Rolling Hills Estates, CA), Evie (Sherman Oaks, CA), and Susan (San Diego County), and many other relatives.

A funeral service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1710 Foothill Drive, SLC on October 22nd at 11AM. Committal at the Salt Lake City cemetery, 200 N St. A viewing will be held on Friday October 21st from 6-8PM at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E So. Temple. The family requests that those wishing to honor Doug donate or volunteer time at any of the charities listed above.

Remembering Doug

My fondest memories of Doug all center on his generosity and sense of humor. As a kid he was great at sharing-both his toys and his humorous interpretation of events.

I´ll never forget his three darling dogs, dressed in costumes and seated in highchairs at the Thanksgiving table one year. I can still hear Doug´s laugh.

Doug never mentioned it much, but we all knew how often he was busy helping others: volunteering for various charities, serving as groundskeeper for his church, and a generous friend to many.

Doug´s humor and generosity touched many lives. His kindnesses will never be forgotten.

Carl, Kirtley, and I share your sorrow, Kirt.

Love, Diana Wienbroer (cousin)

My memories of Doug go way back and every one of these vignettes that fill my mind are also filled with joy and love--and very often, mischief, as we embarked on summer vacation adventures when I'd visit SLC from Texas or Oklahoma or Los Angeles, as the years had me relocating. My first memory is about age three when my family visited from Texas for Thanksgiving with my mom's family--her sister Anne, and Anne's sons Kirt and Doug. I'm in between the ages of my two cousins, and will always cherish my dear memories. Love to the whole family as we hold Doug in our hearts. Evelyn
