One National Park Service standard is “leave it better than you found it.” Ferd certainly did so with his volunteer work with the garden at Booker T. He designed the planting rows, introduced a lot of new varieties of plants. I think he suggested the cold frame to start seedlings, give them a better chance to survive. Year after year, he was merciless in his quest to make it perfect! (I mean that in a good way.) Everyone at Booker T. will smile knowingly if they read this. Nothing else was more important to him than the garden. Visitors and staff were the beneficiary of his good works. Another NPS standard is “take pictures, leave footprints.” The pictures will live on in our memories; the footprints in our hearts…and in the garden.

My condolences to the family. The Ferd I knew was a good man, always cheerful and upbeat and that's how I will remember him.
