George Hoxsie Obituary

George Gordon Hoxsie, Jr. 1918 ~ 2005 George Gordon Hoxsie, Jr., age 87, died Thursday, January 13, 2005, at his daughter's home in Salt Lake City, after a long illness. Gordon was born January 5, 1918 in Magna, Utah to George Gordon and Laura Anderson Hoxsie. He grew up in Salt Lake City where he was student body president of South High School, graduating in 1935. He attended George Washington University and graduated from the University of Utah where he received a degree in history in 1939 and a law degree in 1941. A retired Salt Lake City attorney and businessman, he was a man of many interests and had a keen mind. He spoke several languages and traveled throughout the world. As a youth he excelled in debate and became an Eagle Scout; and he always encouraged his children and grandchildren to excel in their educational pursuits. He particularly enjoyed playing chess with long-time friends, his sons, son-in-law and his grandchildren. He is survived by nine children: Laurie Steimle, Salt Lake City; George G. Hoxsie III (Kay), Mesa, AR; Michael Hoxsie (Leslie), Ogden; Carmen Bullock (Richard), South Jordan; Kathy Hoxsie, Logan; Gloria Chambers, Salem, OR; Eric Hoxsie, Salem, OR; Heidi Hoxsie-Barry (Hal), Portland, OR; Hilary Ripley (William), Salt Lake City; three sisters: Maleta Robinson, Fay Ashton and Donna Leverich, all of Salt Lake City; 25 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Blanche Hoxsie; grandson, Jonathan Hoxsie, son-in-law, Dennis Steimle; three brothers-in-law: Wilford Robinson, Lisle Ashton and James Leverich. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005 at 12:00 noon at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Rd., where family and friends may visit one hour prior to service. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

We met Gordon in Dragerton Utah and Gordon taught my dad how to play chess in turn taught my brothers. They once played against Bobby Fisher. My brother was only 12 and Bobby Fisher talked to him after the game. We have lots of memories regarding Gordon Hoxie.

George Gordon Hoxsie was a man who was steadfast in his beliefs about the world. His commitment and lifelong adherence to his political and social ideals were worthy of our admiration.
