Gordon Reynolds Obituary

Gordon Elmer Reynolds 1945 ~ 2007 Born June 1945, to Lloyd Winfield Reynolds and Leah Beckstead Reynolds in Salt Lake City, and returned home on a very special day, December 25, 2007. Married (later divorced) Janice Mae Miller in 1963, they had three children; Gordon (Frankie), Scott (Jana), and Russell (Patty). Gordon then married Kathleen Smail Bywaters in 1985, and added three more children; Diana (Ross) Eagar of Arizona, Duane Bywaters and Dan (Leslie) Bywaters. Survived by his wife Kathleen, six children and 21 grandchildren, sister Leah Rae (Kenny) Dringle of Arizona; brothers, Kent (Glenna) and Larry (Julie); mother-in-law Mary Smail of Ohio; sisters-in-law, Nola Edger of Montana, Linda (Paul) O'Donnell; many loved and cherished nieces, nephews, other extended family members and dear friends. Preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Warren. Gordon could fish for hours in the mountains, even without a hook. He loved working with the Boy Scouts where he was more often the bigger kid. Gordon enjoyed the old crafts of the Mountain Man including his own Buckskin outfit and Scrimshaw. He drove truck for many years and found joy in the people, the unending scenery and the physical work. He served a Family History Mission with his wife Kathy in Salt Lake City, Utah and thoroughly enjoyed himself. He could be a big bear with a peanut butter heart, a spiritual giant, a voracious reader, a tender thoughtful man (especially with the grandchildren), and a man of steel who was able to endure incredible pain and many trials. The family wishes to express gratitude to the many people in the medical field who served and prolonged Gordon's life countless times during the past 20 years. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007 at 12:00 noon with a two-hour viewing prior to services at the Kearns Western Hills 3rd Ward, 5380 West 5400 South. Dear Kathy and children,
I was blessed to have been in two wards with Gordon, first in the Kearns 5th ward and then in the Western Hills Ward when he married Kathy. What a big, tender, loving man. I also was able to see you two when I was working in the Family History Department and you two were serving your mission there. He will be missed but know God's plan is perfect, he will welcome you and all of us when it's our turn to return to the Lord with those big arms waiting to hug us again. My life has been richly blessed because of knowing both of you.

I grew up in the old Kearns 5th ward and knew Gordon and his family. He was a good influence and example to my family, and those he came in contact with. He was kind hearted and soft spoken, which made him easy to talk to. We will miss him greatly. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Where to begin?

Gordon was an inspired youth leader. I was privileged to enjoy his leadership on multiple occasions, which included my 11 year old Sunday School Class and many areas of scouting.

Bro. Reynolds had an irreplaceable ability to work with rambunctious young men. Though we pushed him to his limits more than once, I am sure that my fellow classmates from our 11 year old Sunday School class would agree with me when I say that he was the best teacher we had and that we really liked him. That is saying a lot coming from that age of kids. We were pretty difficult to deal with.

His kindness and patience did more for me as a youth than most anything else I experienced in Kearns. I owe a lot of who I am today to his example and tutoring. (which I hope is a good thing!) I send my condolences to those grieving over Gordan's passing from this world.

The best comfort I can offer is that Gordan Reynolds left a legacy that will be passed down through generations of the James family. He will not be forgotten.

With love,

I will forever cherish the wisdom quietly spoken at the waters edge..the appreciation and knowledge of all things of this world..the deeper understanding of the next..and the quick humor that balanced it. Until we meet again..

My condolences to the Reynonlds family. I am one of the many scouts that "Big G" had an influence on. Those were wonderful times that brought lessons and friendships that last a lifetime. Again, my sympathies to "Little G", Scott, Russell and to Kathleen.
Sincerely, Cory Anderson and family
