Jack Cox Obituary

Farmington, UT-Jack A. Cox, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and physician, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2013. Jack, son of Frederick Harris and Catherine Pett Cox, was born on May 22, 1936, in Pocatello, ID. He married Janet Louise Chapman of Rexburg, ID, on August 17, 1962, in the Idaho Falls Temple; they are the parents of five children and grandparents of 18 grandchildren. Jack's family was his greatest joy, and he often told his children and grandchildren they were his finest accomplishment. Jack and Janet were blessed to celebrate 51 years together. Jack was ambitious, bright, and-as he often told his children-he worked his "tail feathers off." After graduating from Utah State University, Jack earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado. His specialty training and service in the U.S. Army included assignments in Ft. Lewis, WA, Ft. Campbell, KY, Washington, D.C., and Stuttgart and Heidelberg, Germany. Dr. Cox practiced as an Ear, Nose, and Throat Physician for 35 years and was revered by his patients for his compassion and gentle ways. Jack was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a missionary in Helsinki, Finland, and served in many church callings, including bishop, high councilor, and counselor in a stake presidency. Jack and Janet were service missionaries at the BYU Jerusalem Center from 2006-2007, and their time together in the Holy Land was one of the highlights of their lives. Jack lived his life without fanfare. He was the truest gentleman and preferred serving outside the limelight. Many of his kindest acts were performed anonymously. Jack was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family, who will always cherish his legacy of kindness, dedication, humility, and integrity. Jack is survived by his wife, Janet; their five children and their spouses, Jeff (Gayle) Cox, Julia Cox, Jon (Amy) Cox, Jana (Tyler) Brough, Jason (Leslie) Cox; and their 18 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 26, at 11:00 a.m. at the Farmington North Stake Center, 729 Shepard Court, in Farmington, UT. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, November 25, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 1941 N. Main St., Farmington, as well as from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Interment will follow services at the Farmington Cemetery. Two of Jack's greatest passions were caring for children and the needy. Please consider Primary Children's Hospital or the LDS Humanitarian Fund in honor of Jack. I was baptized in October 1972 and moved to Heidelberg GE in November 1972. Jack was my first Bishop and became my mentor. I couldn't have had a more kind, patient, considerate person than Jack Cox to shepherd me into the church. He never rebuked, he counseled in his kind, gentle manner. He was guided by the Holy Spirit and led by example. Jack was the true example of the Savior's love. He inspired all who knew him to be a better Latter-Day Saint. He enriched my life and I mention him often as an example of humility, love, and grace. His physician skills saved my youngest daughter's life, He is missed and never forgotten.

Dear Janet and family,
Even though it has been many years, as I stated previously, Jack is a man that will live in cherished memories. As he was the man that set the example for me I know he was an influence on many others. In my callings as a teacher, I've had, on many occasions, the opportunity to share the Jack Coxisms, with the classes. His Legacy lives on in the many lives he has touched, directly and indirectly. He will never be forgotten.
With Gospel Love,

Jack Cox exemplified the teachings found in the Doctrine & Covenants 121: 41 & 42 - "No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned; By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile -" An imposing giant of a man in so many ways: tall, handsome, well-spoken, truly caring, understanding and always willing to step out of his comfort zone to lift others! In his quiet and gentle way he reached out to many who needed a helping hand! God Bless the Memory of this most unique and outstanding man, and Let Us Not Forget Him!

Dear Janet - I was saddened to hear of Jack's passing while out of town last week. We have great memories of the times together in Heidelberg. Jack was a "teacher by example" to me when I served with him in the Bishopric. He was so firm in his convictions, yet so gentle in his abilities to persuade and show love, a truly remarkable man. Janet, I feel very blessed to have had you for my visiting teaching partner and the fact that you usually brought your sweet, kind and patient husband, Jack along. What an example you have been for me with you devotion and loving care of Jack. It also gave me a chance to know Jack (somewhat), and I know he is loved very much by many people and will be missed greatly by you and your family. He is a special man of God and you will be together again. I am here for you, and you are in my prayers. Always, Sue

Dear Janet,
I am so sorry to hear of your husband's passing. You probably don't remember me, but my family and I lived in your parents' tri-plex from 1958-65. I was 8 years old when you got married. I remember how happy your mother was about your marriage. She was a loving friend to my Swedish mother. My father worked with your father at the college. I remember Mr. Chapman as being a brilliant, soft-spoken, kind man. I have wonderful memories of living in the Chapman apartments. I hope you will find comfort during this difficult time.
