Jonathan Nichols Obituary

1954 ~ 2013
Salt Lake City, UT-Jonathan "Jack" Arthur Nichols was born in Salt Lake City, UT, July 17, 1954 to Richard Arthur and Alice Jeanne Nichols.
After graduating from Olympus High School, Jack had a choice encounter with the love of his life, Lauretta Larson, while enjoying ice cream at Snelgove's. Jack spotted the most beautiful girl that he had ever seen while she was on a date. He followed her home, learned her identity, and sought out an opportunity to ask her out. Though she did not know this complete stranger, she consented to a blind date, opening the way to an enduring relationship.
Jack took 2 years away to serve as a full-time missionary for the LDS church in the California Oakland Mission. Less than a year after his return, on July 1, 1978, Jack and Lauretta were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. They would welcome 4 sons into their home.
One of Jack's greatest joys in life was to teach and mentor his sons through coaching. He coached a competitive youth soccer team called the Vikings and various other soccer and basketball teams. Throughout his life, dedication to his family was paramount. His love for his family grew as he enjoyed the opportunity to read stories and play with his grandchildren. His ultimate joy was having his family around him and made sure his family knew of his testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Jack died on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, from heart failure. He is survived by his wife, Lauretta; his 4 sons, Jeffrey (Melissa), Steven (Melissa), Brett (Wendy), and Kevin; his 9 grandchildren Samantha, Andrea, Joshua, Benjamin, Austin, Alexis, Katherine, Amanda, and Noelle; his mother, Jeanne; his 3 siblings, Leigh, David, and Laurie; and he is proceeded in death by his father, Richard.
A viewing will take place on Friday, August 23, 2013 from 6:30-8:00 pm at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 11:00 am with a viewing prior 9:30-10:30 am at the Holladay North Stake Center, 4395 South Albright Drive, Holladay, UT. Interment afterwards at Wasatch Lawn.

Dearest Nichols Family:

We are sincerely sorry and saddened to learn of your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time.

We remember with fondness, some thirty six years ago, Elder Nichols coming into our lives. The countless lessons and messages of love, hope, peace, eternal life, forgiveness, and teachings of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. He was a great missionary with a wonderful spirit about him. He taught with love and compassion, and he knew how to have fun too. :)

Thank you for sharing his life with our family, and for keeping in touch with Mom and Dad.

May you continually feel of his love, and know he is watching over you all.

This morning Jewel was going through some news papers that have been piling up through the week and found Jacks Obituary. She called me at work to give me the sad new. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have good memories of my last area of my mission with Jack as my companion. We will be out of town this afternoon until Saturday night. I'm so sorry we will not be able to come to the viewing or funeral. Our prayers are with you. May the Lord send down his Holy Angels to give you strength through this most difficult time in your life.
Love, Stan and Jewel Martin

Dear Nichols Family -
Although I didn't have the honor of knowing Jack, I was fortunate to learn alot about him through my friendship with Wendy and especially from her girls. I know how much they enjoyed spending time with him and, from their own comments, how much they truly loved him. Please know your family is in my thoughts and prayers daily.
