Joseph Newey Obituary

Joseph M. Newey
1929 ~ 2018
Joseph Moyes Newey was born in Ogden, Utah on August 25, 1929, to Joseph LeRoy and Roberta Afton Moyes Newey. He died in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 13, 2018.
He was raised in Ogden and graduated from Ogden High School, class of 1947, even though he was serving in the U.S. Army Infantry in Korea on graduation day. He is also a graduate of the University of Utah. At a later time, when he was the father of four children, he received his MBA Degree in Finance from the University of Denver.
He completed a successful LDS Mission in Texas-Louisiana; serving under President and Sister Benjamin L. Bowring who became his lifelong friends and mentors.
Shortly after his mission he married Margaret Ann Harbertson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Sweet, gentle Margaret was his inspiration, best friend, and the love of his life through the 66 years of their marriage.
They became parents of seven children: Diane Maynes Butterfield (Vee), Salt Lake City; Mark (Seung), Tacoma, Washington; Brian (Kay Lynn), Salt Lake City; Laura Duffin (Mark), Salt Lake City; Lincoln (Lori), Salt Lake City; Paul (Katrina), Alpine Utah, and Lisa Stringham (John), Salt Lake City.
Their home was a place of books, music, learning, and love with a playful bit of push and shove. Family vacations were always memorable. Other families and friends joined in the excitement of Lake Powell with cliff jumping, water skiing, and boating; or riding horses at the Provo River Property; and skiing at every opportunity, but never on Sunday.
In 1961, he and M. Darrell Nilson formed Nilson-Newey & Co., Inc., a securities and insurance brokerage firm. This was a pioneering effort, being one of the first independent firms to market both investments and insurance. The concept generated from his MBA training, and has since become the standard in the industry.
He obtained his CLU designation and was member of the Million Dollar Round Table for thirty-eight consecutive years. His clients became dear friends and he was privileged to associate with many of Salt Lake's prominent business and professional leaders. He and Darrell Nilson remained partners for nearly forty years, until poor health required his retirement in 1999 at age 70.
He was active in the LDS Church and sang with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He served as a Scoutmaster, Stake Mission President, Branch President on two occasions, Bishop, member of the Salt Lake Ensign Stake Presidency for nine years, and was a member of the Melchizedek Priesthood MIA General Board. In later years he taught the Sunday School Gospel Doctrine Class and was a Ward Clerk.
He often quoted President Spencer W. Kimball: "I would rather wear out than rust out."
He was proceeded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert L. Newey, sister, Afton Granger Casbeer, two granddaughters, Sarah and Melissa Maynes, a grandson, Christopher K. Maynes, and their father C. Keith Maynes. He is survived by his wife Margaret, seven children, fifteen grandchildren, and twenty-seven great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held Thursday, May 17 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 S., Salt Lake City. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 18 at 12:00 Noon at the Cottonwood 4th Ward chapel, located at 5465 S. Neighbor Lane (near 1600 E.), Holladay Utah 84117. On learning of the recent passing of President Newey’s dear companion, Margaret, we are delighted to know that she is once again in the embrace of her greatest admirer. President Newey treated her (& spoke of her) as if she & he were on their second date - he seemed “delighted” to have “found” this special person whom he had been seeking... he was a “romantic” who had found his “one & only.” (Even though they were “married, with children,” his countenance changed when he spoke of her — she was very “special.”) She was more than his wife, she was his “treasure.” We miss them both; they were examples of courtesy & their respect for each other never diminished.

Joe Neweys approach to religion & his example should be patented. He was one of a kind. He was not overbearing & never self righteous. Indeed, he was the consummate listener & we always felt that he understood. He was not given to self congratulation but was a saintly leader in regular clothing. Joe was sincerely interested in the struggles of others & responded pragmatically. He did not use guilt or shame as tools of leadership; instead he demonstrated righteousness in his words & deeds & was ALWAYS humble, never arrogant. We loved him & know that he will be among the planners in the spirit world calmly & sincerely reaching out to engage the forlorn, the marginalized & the reticent. He will lead without being at the head of the line. His powerful example & his unelaborated style build the confidence of those who would otherwise stand aloof. Indeed, Joe Newey did not need to pontificate or weep to persuade us to join with him. He was our role model in life without guile & utterly credible, yet happy, even joyous. We loved him dearly.

Joe & Margaret Newey were our role models when we were married. Pres. Newey called Scott as the Elders Quorum Pres. & Mary Beth as the Relief Society Pres. & suggested that we set the example by attending a New Years dance celebration of the Ensign Single Adult Branch (1973-74). We were subsequently married & held our wedding reception in their 18th Av home. The event was a success as we had no $$ to pay for wedding festivities. The reception cost $89.00 total. Pres. Newey was a matter of fact, direct-speak pragmatist who was supportive & inspiring. We adore Margaret & Lisa who helped with the reception. We have been married for (nearly) 45 years & adopted 21 children --- all due to the encouragement of the GREATEST FACILITATOR we have ever met. We are deeply grieved at his passing. We will remind our children & grandchildren that their parents (grandparents) "found" each other as a result of inspired leadership & sound, direct, matter of fact counseling. We are certain that we are not the only couple which benefitted from his example. His former mission president, Benjamin Bowring, conducted our wedding in the Salt Lake Temple. We are eternally "connected" to this righteous man & his wife. His inspired leadership & testimony of the Gospel plan has impacted generations, now & yet to be born. Pres Newey had an impossible responsibility to lead & inspire hundreds of "singles" where the women outnumbered the men 4:1. He led with good humor, integrity & "do as I do" not "do as I tell you." While he was a successful businessman, that success was invisible to his congregants. He was first of all, a righteous disciple of Christ. He was always forward looking, optimistic & nonjudgmental. We loved him.

My condolences to the family of President Newey. He was the branch president of the Ensign Branch in the early 70's. He was wonderful in that capacity. Understanding of the trials of young people. May his family be comforted at this time of mourning.
