Joyce Osborne Obituary

Joyce Hoagland Osborne

1926 ~ 2023

Joyce was born on September 29, 1926 to Bert O. Hoagland and Loral Becker Hoagland and lived all her life in Salt Lake City. She died August 15 at age 96 after living a wonderful life full of love and good friendships.

She attended the University of Utah in the waning days of World War II, while working parttime as a fashion model, and in the evenings dancing to all the famous Big Bands that played at the Rainbow. She then went to work for the Veterans Administration where she met her first husband, Marvin J. Butterfield, of Riverton, Utah. They were married in 1948, and shortly after Marv joined the Salt Lake City Police Department. They had three children, Jody Butterfield (Allan Savory), Shelley Bernick (Bob), and Scott Butterfield (Nancy).

After all three children were well into their school years, Joyce went back to work as an administrative assistant at the University of Utah College of Medicine in 1965 and ten years later as a personal assistant to L.S. Skaggs at his Salt Lake American Stores headquarters. Following her divorce from Marv in 1973, Joyce began to travel with friends and work colleagues and remained passionate about exploring new places and cultures the rest of her life. In 1983 she married an old acquaintance from her university days, Paul E. Osborne, and enjoyed many happy years until his death in 2000. In the years after she spent much of her time in the company of lifelong friends playing bridge, golf, enjoying good food, and traveling the world with them and with her children and grandchildren, Laurel Bernick Bonnyman and Elizabeth Hoagland Bernick.

Joyce derived great joy from being a grandmother. Her two granddaughters affectionately referred to her as their "outdoor grandma" because she taught them how to swim, ride a bike, and jump off the high dive. They will always have many happy memories of playing with their vivacious and rule-breaking grandma.

Joyce is survived by her three children, two grandchildren, and three great grand-children.

She is preceded in death by her beloved brother, Richard W. Hoagland, and many dear friends.

She requested that her remains be donated to the University of Utah for medical research. There will be no services.

Joyce was a beautiful and "feisty" bridge friend! We also shared the same political views! I will miss her and her quick wit!

Awwww..... Joyce was a sunny smile on a cloudy day. A beautiful administrator of love. I'm thankful for her many years with us, but she will be sorely missed.
Our heartfelt condolences to all the family.
Sincerely, (Scott's friends)

Deepest condolences. I Always thought so much of Aunt Joyce. She was very special to Bill, his guardian angel in his teenage years. May she rest in peace
