Robert Howard Obituary

Robert Morgan Howard 1922 ~ 2008 Born June 7, 1922 in Salt Lake City to Orrin Monroe and Emma Rozina Howard, Robert Morgan Howard passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8th, surrounded by loving family.Bob always embraced his many responsibilities, from being a watchful brother, helping to raise his younger brother, Ron, during the depression, to serving during World War II in the Pacific as an Army Air Corps Crew Chief for aircraft bombers. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah, he immediately was hired by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company where he worked until retirement as a head mechanical engineer. Bob's responsibilities included supervising major steel fabrication projects around the nation, such as municipal water storage tanks, and space chambers. Robert met his Dutch sweetheart, Sietske Sophia, and married in 1952, raising 4 children- his son, Jerry, and daughters, Jean, Janet, and Shirley. Passionate about his every undertaking, one of Bob's lifelong passions was motorcycles, whether it was putting them together or racing them, in particular, Indian motorcycles. He won many awards not only in hill climbs and racing, but also in boxing, in which he competed during the army, becoming the number two national contender. He also won championships in collegiate boxing, and boxed in the Golden Gloves where he fought up-and-coming professional, Gene Fulmer. Bob's drive to exceed showed in his awards for marksmanship and bowling, too. Bob shared his love for nature and history with family outings to ghost towns and old pioneer trails, along with his love for fishing, camping, golf, collecting, poetry, and big band music. He had the ability to fix almost everything. His Springer Spaniel dogs, Sears and Roebuck, became like family members. He is survived by his wife, children, nine grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren, and brother. Bob's legacy of unselfishness and caring, for being responsible and excellent at all you do, for being courageous and adventurous, being unconventional and having fun, yet always putting your family first, has helped define everyone who has known him, especially his family. He is greatly loved and admired, and we can never thank him enough for all he has done for us. We will always cherish him, and he will always live on in our hearts. Services are being held Saturday, Jan 12th, at 11:00, at the Murray Parkway Stake Center, 5750 South 619 West, Murray, UT. A viewing will be held an hour prior to services at the same location. Interment is at the Redwood Memorial Park, 6500 So. Redwood Rd., West Jordan. 801-969-3456. Heartfelt thanks goes out to all that cared and supported our family including Caregiver Support Network, Alta Ridge Alzheimer's Community, and CareSource Hospice.

Well Bob you made it; I didn't think Siets would join you so soon but I'm sure you're happy about that. I remember having my first American uncle when you and Siets got married, I was barely 8 yrs old. Finally had a family member who didn't speak with an accent; I remember my bike rides to Rose Park and getting lunch Tante Siets would make for Jerry and I; Every time I rode my bike past Chicago Bridge and Iron I thought "My uncle is a big shot there" and it would give me a feeling of pride knowing I had an American uncle that was so important. The times I fished with you at Scofield were great fun times; God bless you Bob and now both of you; together again having been just barely apart. Peace to all of my cousins; Bob/Siets are great pair to draw to;

Bob was such a good guy. I will miss seeing him at family events. I always enjoyed Bob. He always took time to stop and talk with us on his comings and goings to CBI when we were teens. I remember playing b-ball with Ray, John, and Grant and on several occasions Bob would stop on 17th South (the Garage "HOOP") and say hi and watch for a few moments. I will always remember his smiles. We always thought he was rather "cool" in his sports car. Anyway, lots of fun memories.
I will also remember his kindness whenever I saw him and talked with him.
I enjoyed the services and thought that they were a wonderful tribute. Thanks for all the goodness of the family in our lives,
May peace fill your hearts knowing that "All is Well",

What an honor it is to be in Opa's family!! The years I have spent in this family weren't Opa's best, but were more than enough to be inspired in many ways by him. I know he is very happy now, and I am so happy for him. You will always mean so much to this family Opa!! I love you and will be sure my kids know what an awesome great grandfather they had!!!

Between the beautiful celebration of his life on Saturday and this wonderfully well written life sketch - one can easily sense the man that he was and the father/grandfather/greatgrandfather that he will forever be in both your hearts and minds.

Our love to all of you (and especially our dearest Auntie Shirley) at this time and always,

Dear Sietske and Family, Thinking of you during this difficult time. I always remember Bob recited his favorite poem Sam Magee at family parties. It was fun to see him get excited about the poem. I remember the nice times we had eating luncheons at Chuck-A-Rama and he would always tell us stories from the War. It was great getting to know Bob through the years and he will be missed! I know he is in a better place with Henk.

Love,
Anna (Sietske's sister)

Dear Tante Siets, Jerry, Jean , Janet and Shirley and all the family, We just wanted to let you all know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers at this time of Uncle Bob's passing. Uncle Bob's presence will truly be missed at all the family parties. I enjoyed his great wit and ability to always make you laugh. And it was fun in the day that I did some engineering to talk about the trade. We will miss you Uncle Bob. May the Lord Bless you and all your loved ones at this time.
Love, Grant, Linda and the kids

My deepest sympathies to the entire Howard family. The last time I saw Bob was about 15 years ago. I rode my motorcycle out to the house. We talked and laughed for hours looking at old photos and the motorcycle and rifle collection. Bob had a way of making you feel at home in his home. He was the best photographer I ever knew and I can thank him for many pictures and movies of my Dad on his motorcycles. They were best friends Bob and John. All the way through school and life together. From the same neighborhood. I now will miss them both. Mike

My Dad, John Lelis would always talk about Bob Howard and their escapades together. They were good friends. I also remember visiting your family, when I was a little boy and all of the beautiful girls at the Howard’s house. I remember when Bob would visit me at the shop and we would have wonderful conversations about the old days and everything else. He loved his family very much. My heart goes out to you at this time of loss. Please know that you are in my prayers.

I watched grandpa all my life. To me he was a perfect example of why they referred to his as the greatest generation. His faithful service to his country defined patriotism. His patient and loving nature with his bride defined chivalry. His work ethic defined what it means to be a provider. His passion for his interests defined what it is to be human.

I only bowled with him once but I bowled one of my best games ever at his gentle direction to "slow down". You could always tell he had something more critical to say but usually censored his censure in favor of being kinder and gentler than he had to be.

We would go fishing with my father and grandpa so dad could supervise and keep the kids from driving grandpa over the edge. In one of his bolder and more memorable outings he just took the boys camping without my dad to a dusty desert campground in the oquirrh range. There was only the water he had brought and it was gone way to fast with a bunch of dirty young men covered in marshmallow. We sat by the fire as grandpa read aloud from one of his favorite tomes of the old west. Cowboy stories always seemed more authentic when they came from grandpa. I knew this was a memorable trip for Grandpa as well as towards the end of his life Grandpa would mention this trip almost every time we would get together.

I will always cherish his memory. I love you Grandpa.

Bob will allways hold a special place in my heart. We had so many fun times together from the car shows I'd take him to, to visiting the antique shops, museums and Jade Cafe. I loved taking him for drives in the canyon and listening to his stories and the tale of Sam Magee. I always admired how much family support Bob had, I could see in his eyes when he'd speak of his family how much Love he had for each member. I will truely miss Bob. May God Bless his family and help them through this very difficult time.
