Gerald Jewell Obituary
Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Gerald W. Jewell, born July 2, 1932 in Evansville, Indiana, passed away September 27, 2005. He was a resident of San Antonio, Texas since 1967 and retired from the Air Force at Randolph AFB in July 1975. He was an active member of the San Antonio Airport Noise Abatement Committee, the Air Transportation Advisory Commission for the City of San Antonio, the National Defense Transportation Association and the Northern Hills Homeowners Association. He was also a licensed Texas Real Estate Realtor and Broker from July 1975 to October 2004. Colonel Jewell is survived by his wife, Voneta Jean Carter Jewell and son, Mitchell Paul Jewell, both residents of San Antonio. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Jewell Tickner of Vancouver, B.C., Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilford B. Jewell and Golda May Morrison Jewell. He was a graduate of Evansville College in Evansville, Indiana, where he received his undergraduate degree in Music Education as a voice major. Following graduation he taught music and was a basketball coach in the Vevay, IN Public School System. He earned his Masters Degree in Procurement Management at the University of Texas and Webster College. Colonel Jewell received his commission through the Air Force ROTC program in August 1954 and entered the Air Force on active duty in July 1955. He served in a large variety of operations, logistical and command positions in the United States and overseas. His assignments included Stewart AFB, Tenn.; NAS Agana, Guam; Travis AFB, CA; Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio; Osan AB, Korea; Naha AB, Okinawa, AFROTC at Tuskegee Institute, AL; Da Nang AB, Vietnam; and Randolph AFB, TX. His military awards included the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal (with one Bronze Star), the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service medal (with five Bronze Stars), the Korean Defense Award Medal, and the Air Force Reserve Medal. Throughout his distinguished military and civilian careers he maintained a passionate love of music. He participated in amateur musicals and was an avid concert attendee and collector of rare operatic recordings. The family will receive friends from 3:00-6:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 2, 2005 at Porter Loring Mortuary North. SERVICE MONDAY OCTOBER 3, 2005 1:00 P.M.
