Ida Nauschutz Davis

1923 - 2018

Ida Nauschutz Davis ("Mommy Dear"), the sweetest spirit this side of heaven, was called home by the Lord on the morning of January 7, 2018. Ida was born in San Antonio October 5, 1923 to Paul Carl and Frieda Oppermann Nauschutz. She graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio, and attended Incarnate Word College and became a Registered Nurse and worked at Santa Rosa Hospital and John Sealy Hospital in Galveston.

Ida met and married Marion "Red" Davis in 1946. They were partners in a life as a military family with assignments across the United States, the Philippines and in Europe. They transitioned from Austin 7 years ago to reside at the Army Residence Community in San Antonio. Ida was a true military wife who loved being a mother, understood the demands of Red's military career and fully supported him in every way while enjoying her role as the always-available parent and community volunteer.

Ida was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Paul (Bud) Nauschutz, and her sister Rose Bridget. Ida is survived by her husband Marion (Red), and their children Donald (Cheryl), William (Sharon), Patricia (the late David), and Bruce (Lisa). Ida and Red have eight grandchildren, Brooke (Charles), Erin, Lauren (Jeff), Celeste, Allison, Catherine (Manuel), Kathryn (Jonathan), and Hunter (Katlin). She and Red were blessed with a great grandson, Theodore.

Ida was dedicated to the service of others. She found great joy in her volunteer work as a room mother, Cub and Girl Scout leader, with the National and International Red Cross, and as a poll worker. At the Good Shephard Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas, she helped make delicious meals as part of the church ministry and helped with visitation to comfort the sick and the homebound. Ida was that rare individual who would serve with joy and purpose and without complaint. The clothes she hand-smocked for her grandchildren will be passed down for future generations. She loved God's gifts especially flowers, and created and maintained beautiful gardens in all of the family homes.

With all of her many talents, Ida considered her proudest calling to be as a mother of four children. She loved her family most of all and the expression of that love was felt by each of us in a special way. What will be most missed are her beautiful written notes and letters, her warm hugs and affection and never-ending positive encouragement. Ida's legacy will endure through the love she gave to others during her life. Heaven will surely rejoice as she joins the ranks of angels!

Ida's life and legacy will be celebrated Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at 2:00pm at the Army Residence Community Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Organization, an organization to which Ida faithfully contributed.
