DUPONT
Major General Rene G. Dupont passed away March 6, 2012 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. General Dupont was born in Los Angeles, California.
He truly rose through the ranks. He entered the Army Air Corps as an enlisted man. He was commissioned in 1942 after completing the Army Air Force Officer Candidate School. He attended the Royal Air Force Flying Control School in England and assisted in the standardization of U.S. flying control procedures with those of the British. George, as he preferred to be called, returned to the U. S in 1943 and completed pilot training and B-24 combat crew training in August 1944. He then returned to England where he flew B-17 bombers. In 1959 General Dupont returned to Hq Strategic Air Command as Chief of the Future Weapons Branch. He was instrumental in the early planning and deployment of the first SAC intercontinental ballistic missiles -- the Atlas and Titan and, later, the Minuteman.
He attended the National War College in 1963 and was assigned as Air Force Planner for Joint and National Security Council matters. In June 1967 he was assigned to Supreme Hq Allied Powers Europe Belgium. During this time he was invited to play a game of golf with the King of Belgium. He won the match. There was no rematch!
In 1969 General Dupont was assigned as Commander of the U.S. Air Force Military Personnel Center at Randolph Air Force Base.
He was then assigned to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. as Assistant Secretary, Deputy Chief of Staff. An accomplished speaker, he gave a briefing to President Kennedy in the Rose Garden at the White House.

Dear Jeannette,
Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss of my uncle George! He was my life long idle since I was a kid. Somewhere in mom's collection of things is an 8mm movie of me and George sitting in the cockpit of a T-6 trainer at Stead Air Forse base in Reno in 1941 when he was a airplaine mechanic there!
I was with him when he went to Burbank Airport to meet with General Lemay in 1946 where he was offered the permanent rank Captain position to re-up and become a member of the SAC.
I've never forgoten the time I was rear ended in his brand new 1956 Chevy in Springfield MA! He and Jackie went to a dinner party at General Parks house, then base commander at Westover, and he loaned me his car to go to a Stan Kenton concert in Holyoke. I was at a stop sign when this car crashed into my rear end! I was about an hour late picking George up from the party and George was furious with me! Jackie, General Park and his wife were only concerned if I was all right. It wasn't my fault!!!
When he was at Randolph about 1969 or 1970 I played golf with George and he took me to the BX and he bought me my first set of golf clubs! I still have them!
Jannette, I also have very fond memories of our fishing trip to Galveston when I first met you! It was great fun although a little dicey outrunning the storm!
George is a great loss to us all but I'm sure he is now at pease judging from all his problems these past years! I will surely miss him but he will always remain a bright spot in my life!
