SARAH CONGER Obituary

Sarah Jo Williams Conger (Honey) was born in Gilmer, TX on May 10, 1922 and left this life to be present with the Lord on January 4, 2021.

Her parents were Myrtle Turner Williams and Paschal Klough Williams (Third generation Texans). Sarah was a proud Texan! Growing up in a small town gave her independence to explore and enjoy a happy fulfilling life. She was the youngest of three children, having both an older sister, Virginia and an older brother, Don. The three kept a close relationship even into their 90's. As college students, the three traveled through the Caribbean, Cuba, the Panama Canal and Mexico.

Sarah graduated from Gilmer High School as Valedictorian of her class. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO and graduated in 1945 from The University of Texas in Austin with a BA degree in English. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and served on the UT Cactus Annual staff.

Before college, Sarah and her mother, cousin, and aunt took a five day cruise from New Orleans to New York for the World's Fair. It was on this trip that she met her future husband, Jack Lyles Conger from Uvalde, TX. They had 56 happy, wonderful years together before his death in 2000. Jack and Sarah's marriage on January 13, 1944 was at the beginning of WWII after his graduation from Texas A&M. They had stations in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and finally California where Jack sailed from, to the Philippines, until the war ended.

After the war, they made their home in San Antonio where Jack owned his cattle brokerage firm, Alamo Livestock. Sarah felt blessed to be a stay-at-home mom for their four children Bill, Jane, Bob and John. She enjoyed every activity in which the children were involved including swim meets, football and baseball games, and horse shows. She never grew tired of cheering them on. She was room mother for all four children, a leader in the Girl Scouts, and Den mother in Cub Scouts.

Honey enjoyed working in her oak shaded yard tending to her many plants, walking with friends on La Jara, taking aerobics, and keeping busy in her neighborhood and church. There was never a dull moment with the variety of pets including dogs, ducks, pigeons and a rooster. She treasured her friends, including the 12 ladies who met every Monday for lunch for over 30 years.

In her 70's Honey learned to use the computer and the family always looked forward to "Honey's Sunday Emails". Everyday began with "Breakfast with Honey" texts to her 11 grandchildren. She also kept in touch with friends and her seven nieces and nephews through emails and phone calls.

Honey and her family were all members of St Luke's Episcopal Church since its beginning on Cloverleaf. She was active in the St Frances Guild and the Acolyte Mother's Guild. Her San Antonio organizations included the Battle of Flowers, Daughters of the American Revolution, The Forum Club, Monte Vista Garden Club, The Junior League, Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta, and San Antonio Country Club.

Their family spent part of each summer at the Galveston beach with other family members. Later, they entertained all their children, their spouses and grandchildren at a "Honey's Camp" each summer. The group eventually grew to 22 great grandchildren, whom were each remembered on their birthdays each year.

Honey was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her daughter Jane Conger Cardwell and her son Bob Conger. Surviving her are: The family of Martha and Bill Conger (Kristen and Will Stewart, Marian, Foster and Floyd), Elizabeth and Clayton Conger (Jack, Emma Rose, Charlie, and Mary Kate), Louisa and Will Marsh (Martha and Margaret Jane), and Foster Conger; The family of Sherri and John Conger (Kate and Chris Conger, Lyla, Georgia and Townes), Jamie and Jack Conger, (Sarah Harris, Katherine and Johnny), David and Ashley Conger, and Clint Conger; The family of Lori Conger, wife of deceased son, Bob (Hayley and Brent Conger, Hunt, Lyles and Pack), Mary and Hunter Conger (Catie and Maddie); The family of Dr. David Cardwell (husband of deceased daughter Jane), and Hallie Cardwell (Emily and Jack Cardwell, Jackson and Conger).

Honey especially felt close to her church friends, neighbors, her club members and her children's friends. Special thanks to Teresa and husband Jose De La O who made life easier for her to keep her independence in her last years.

Due to COVID there will be a family only memorial service at St Luke's Episcopal Church with graveside service following at Mission Park North. All 9 grandsons will be honorary pall bearers. The service will be streamed live Thurs., Jan. 14 at 10:30 a.m. through Facebook at @StLukesEpiscopalChurchSanAntonio and through the St Luke's Episcopal Church website: www.slecsa.org/funeral/

I first met Sarah at Theta alumnae meeting when I got out of college and from that moment on, she became an Idol to me. Not only her beauty and poise, but the gracious way she always made me feel special, when actually she was the most special person I ever met.
Fondly, Mary Carter
