Sarah Bertine Obituary
An 8th generation Californian, Sarah was born May 11, 1940, in Santa Maria, California. During WWII, Sarah lived in San Diego, Seattle, and Philadelphia while both her parents supported the war effort (father in the United States Navy and mother in war related industries).
Sarah was known to have a keen ear for aircraft and was quick to alert those around her so they could report it to Civilian Defense, thus doing her part for the security of the homeland. After the war her family settled in San Francisco where Sarah attended Notre Dame High School.
Sarah worked as a telephone operator with Pacific Bell Telephone Company in San Francisco in the early 1960's. Later in life she worked as a bookkeeper in New Jersey and a Court Clerk with the San Benito County Superior Court in Hollister. Sarah also donated her time to the San Benito County Free Library.
Sarah was an avid quilter, knitter, reader, gardener, and amateur genealogist. She loved the San Francisco Giants and San Francisco 49ers.
Sarah was the first-born child of Alfred and Mary (DeRoza) Harper. She was predeceased by her parents, sister Jan Marie Knudson and brother Robert Harper. She is survived by her husband Larry Bertine, daughters Laura (Patrick Schmitzer) Bertine of Morgan Hill, Mary Bertine of Chester NJ, son John (Ellen) Bertine of San Carlos as well as 4 grandchildren: Katherine and Elizabeth Schmitzer, Tessa and Owen Bertine.
