Arthur Bishop Obituary

BISHOP, ARTHUR LYMAN Feb. 27, 1914 to Dec. 24, 2007 Art passed away quietly in his sleep of urinary disease and prostate cancer at the San Diego Hospice Center in Carlsbad, CA. He was the only child of Lyman and Helen Bishop of Denver, CO. Art was raised in Denver and after high school moved to California. He graduated with honors from the California Institute of Technology with a degree in chemical engineering. He began his career of almost forty years with Texaco in their refinery operations. Art was initially assigned to their refinery in Long Beach, CA where he moved up the management ranks over the next twenty years. Subsequent assignments included Anacortes, WA ; Houston, TX; Honduras; and Venezuela. His final posting was as refinery manager in Lawrenceville, IL. After retirement Art moved to San Marcos, CA. Art enjoyed sports and outdoor recreation including swimming, boating, fishing, tennis and golf. He had the distinction of being the starting quarterback in the Rose Bowl on numerous occasions. This accomplishment was possible as Caltech played their home football games there. In his latter years he enjoyed the fellowship of singing with several community groups including the Lakers of Lake San Marcos. Art was a devoted son, caring father, loving husband, and the best friend anyone could have. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lucille Bishop. Survivors include his stepson Steve Craigo; step-grandchildren David and Caren Craigo; in-laws William and Marion Conley; Robert and Richard Conley; and his dear friend and companion Sue Valenti. A family gathering to Celebrate his life will be held in Long Beach later this year. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com
