Brianne Murphy Memoriam

Award-winning cinematographer Brianne Murphy, the first female director of photography to join the American Society of Cinematographers, has died. She was 70.

Ms. Murphy died of brain cancer Aug. 20 at her condominium in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, said her half sister, Sandra Dresdner.

Ms. Murphy was admitted to the cinematographers guild in 1973 and later became the first female director of photography on a major studio feature with 1980 ' s " Fatso. " She joined the exclusive cinematographers society that year and was its only female member for 15 years.

ASC President Richard Crudo said in a statement that Ms. Murphy was " a powerful source of inspiration for the current generation of female cinematographers, who have followed the trail that she courageously blazed. We will miss her spirit. "

Ms. Murphy did cinematography for television series including " Little House on the Prairie " and " In the Heat of the Night. " She was born in London in 1933 and attended Pembroke College before studying acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. She moved to Hollywood in the 1950s.

Ms. Murphy is survived only by her half sister Dresdner.
