Daniel Gomez Obituary

GOMEZ, DANIEL August 11, 1925 to Dec. 31, 2007

Dan Gomez, 82, of La Mesa, California was born and raised in San Diego. He passed away at home on New Year's Eve surrounded by his family after courageously battling ongoing complications from heart disease and three types of cancer over the last 20 years. Immediately after high school, he voluntarily joined and served in the Navy during World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, he enjoyed working as a commercial fisherman for the next seven years. He then joined the drywall industry where he earned an excellent reputation as a drywall installer. Eventually, after more than 30 years, he retired from the Drywall Industry Contract Administration Trust Fund where he worked as a field representative.
He succeeded in everything he attempted to do, earning the respect of everyone he worked with, as well as everyone who came to know him. He was a truly unique, hard working, wonderful, loving and compassionate human being, well known for his honesty, integrity, generosity and kindness. He blessed everyone with his great sense of humor, wit and charm, all the way to the end. Simply saying that he was THE BEST uncle, husband, father, grandfather and friend in the entire world cannot even begin to touch upon the reality of just how blessed we are to have known such an incredible man and what an absolute honor it was to be loved by someone like him. Words cannot describe how much he will be missed by all, especially his fishing buddy, Allie, and his favorite cat, Misty. He was an unbelievably good sport and was always willing to try new things. At 81, he could be found on Allie's scooter at the local park, headed down a steep hill and wearing his bright yellow SpongeBob SquarePants tee shirt. One of our fondest memories is watching him learn to play video games and eventually beat the pants off of us during family Gamecube tournaments. Two great joys in his life were dining out (anywhere) and cheering on his Chargers through the good times and the bad times. After retirement, Dan taught his daughter, Dani and granddaughter, Allie, to fish, which then led to many early morning trips to several local lakes. He thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent with his little buddy, Allie. Dan and his wife Jennie loved music, dancing, late nights at Barona and especially the recent cruises to Canada, Alaska and the Mexican Riviera. Survivors include his loving wife Jennie, his children, Danette (Dani), Carla and Victor Gomez, grandchildren, Allie, Tony and Alyssa, brother, Ignacio Gomez and special nephew and best friend, Rudy Sotelo . HEAVEN JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT BRIGHTER. ... WE LOVE YOU DAD!! Private services have been held. Arrangements by Featheringill Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a fund for the less fortunate in Dan's name to St. John of the Cross Church, c/o Reverend Richard Brown, 8086 Broadway, Lemon Grove, California 91945. The tribute, in the Union-Tribune, to Dan is beautiful and wonderful. My own memories of Dan, from the age of six until his passing has been memorably good. There are many things that I remember about Dan in school, co-dating as a teenager, and into adult life that will always be a treasured part of my memory. We will miss him.

I have known Danny since we were in Washington School together. I knew him when tuna fishing was at its peak here in San diego. I'll always remember he had a smile on his face. My prayers are with his family at this time of sorrow.
