Earl Harvey Obituary
E. Miles Harvey passed away on September 15 at age 92. It can be said with certainty that his was a life well-lived. In addition to his career as a prominent attorney and leadership roles in numerous organizations, he will be remembered for his love of family, his zest for life, and for being a truly interesting and inspiring guy to be around.
After obtaining his degree from UC Berkeley, Miles practiced law for 30 years at Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps. He was known for negotiating complex deals and finding solutions to difficult conflicts, and his client list was filled with the "who's who" in San Diego. One of his most notable cases was successfully defending Commander Lloyd Bucher in the Navy's Court of Inquiry which followed the capture and release of the USS Pueblo by the North Koreans.
Miles was very involved in the San Diego community and served as Chairman or President of a variety of organizations including: San Diego Armed Services YMCA; Defenders Program of SD; Community Defenders Inc.; SD County Bar Foundation; SD Museum of Man; Corporate Finance Council of SD; Metropolitan Sewer Task Force; Federal Court Disciplinary Committee; La Jolla Wine & Food Society; and his condo's Home Owners Association. He served on numerous other boards and committees, and cherished his long term relationships in groups like the Coronado Roundtable, QED, the Military Officers Association of America and the Jewels International Motor Coach Club.
His honors included: San Diego County Bar Association's award as the Legal Professional of the Year; San Diego Press Club's Headliner of the Year award for public service; Mayor's Seahorse Award for Civic Service; two awards for exceptional service and long-term dedication to the Armed Services YMCA; and a honorary doctoral degree from Gannon University. He also achieved the rank of Commander in the Naval Reserves after 24 years of service.
Family life was extremely important to Miles. He married his high school sweetheart Nancy Campbell in 1951. They were married for 62 years, raised three daughters, led a fun-filled social life, and traveled extensively (including traversing the country several times in a series of RVs). They also played an active role in the lives of their two grandchildren. Miles was a devoted caregiver during Nancy's last years before she succumbed to Alzheimer's in 2013. At age 83, he married Kathryn Karpinski. They had nine happy years together, enjoying numerous trips and cruises and spending time with family and friends. In his last few months, Miles was thrilled to meet his first great-grandson and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his second.
Miles is survived by his wife (Kathryn Harvey), daughters and their spouses (Susan and Jeff Wolking, Gail and Alan Parsons, Julie and Martin Doyle), grandchildren and their spouses (Russell and Margot Wolking, Lauren and Ben Reich) and great-grandsons (Liam Miles Wolking and Campbell Kohen Reich).
He will be sorely missed by his family and all the many people whose lives he touched.
