Milton Lovan Austin

AUSTIN, MILTON LOVAN Milton Lovan "Milt" Austin died December 4, 2002 at Sharp Hospital following a stroke. He was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on February 11, 1917. As a young man, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology until his appointment to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. After graduation he worked for several shipping lines until, as a Navy Reserve Officer, he was ordered to active duty prior to World War II. Released from service as a Commander in 1957, he returned to the Merchant Marine as a Master Mariner. One of his local sea experiences included serving as Master of the W.W. Scripps research vessel from La Jolla. Ashore, Milt was active in real estate management, various business ventures, and fraternal organizations. Survivors include his wife, Gloria, children Lisbet O ' Neil and husband John, Lori Austin and husband Steve, and Hank Austin and wife Yolanda, his brother Noel Pendergrass and grandchildren Zoe, Katie, Carrie, Diego, and Marie.
