Frank Sullivan Obituary

Frank Edward Sullivan, 78, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 6, 2013, at home in Grover Beach. He was the fourth of six children born to Ralph and Blanche Sullivan in Minneapolis, Minn. The Sullivan family relocated to San Luis Obispo in 1947, where Frank attended San Luis Obispo High School, then Cal Poly through his freshman year. In 1954, he started a required two-year military obligation in the U.S. Naval Reserve, having served most of it on the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Bremerton as an I.C. Electrician. While in the Navy, he also taught remedial math and discovered his future career. After the Navy, he returned to school. Frank graduated from San Jose State University in 1960, with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology. He was soon employed by Philco in the aerospace industry, until he returned to San Jose State, where he earned his master's degree and teaching credential. While employed by Philco, Frank met and dated his future wife, Jacquelyn Karl. The couple married in 1963, then relocated to the Central Coast when Frank was offered a position at Arroyo Grande High School. He taught typing, business and computer classes for 29 years. Frank served as the Junior Varsity Basketball Coach for six seasons and the Teacher Association President for one year. During summers and holidays, he was a tour guide at Hearst Castle for 28 years. Frank is survived by his wife, Jacky; daughter, Lynne VanArtsdalen (Clay); son, Tom Sullivan (Suzanne); grandchildren Victoria, Lauren, Taylyn, Brandon and Trent; brother, Tom; and sisters Pat and Ann. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m., followed by a celebratory memorial Mass at 10 a.m., Friday, June 21, 2013, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 501 Fair Oaks in Arroyo Grande. Donations may be made in Frank's name to Central Coast Hospice in San Luis Obispo or St. Patrick's School in Arroyo Grande.

Jacky, Linda and I just found out today about your loss. I was in China and Linda was with our daughter. Frank truly was a great man and friend and we will certainly miss him and seeing you two at the donut shop! He was a true blessing to me while teaching with him at AGHS and afterword as well. I loved being part of your group at St. Pat's doing the Grandparenting seminar, and I'll certainly never forget his retirement party! Heaven is a better place with Frank there!

Frank Sullivan was a very unique friend. I met Frank in 1970, but really got to know him when he started teaching computers in the 80's. After we retired we would try and meet once a week to walk and our walks usually lasted an hour or more. We discussed everything under the sun. Frank had the ability to look at any issue from at least two sides and to argue both sides. I learned to appreciate and respect his view on any topic that we talked about. Frank was one of a kind and I will miss my friend very much.

Frank was a man of true stature, and not just in height. You only had to ask and he was willing to share or to suggest solutions or to offer advice. Arroyo Grande the town and Arroyo Grande the school have lost an icon.

A wonderful, very memorable teacher and human being! I have been grateful to Mr. Sullivan my whole life--each time I use a business tool, type a sentence, teach a class, endeavor to learn, or search for self-discipline--Mr. Sullivan's cheerful guidance and sense of humor is there. There are teachers, and then there are great teachers whole are the best life has to offer. Mr. Sullivan was the best. Condolences to the Sullivan family, prayers for your comfort at this time.
