Homer Hoyt

Homer Hoyt Homer Edward Hoyt died peacefully in his sleep on July 22, 2015, in San Luis Obispo. He was 98 years old. Homer was born during the worst snow storm of the year in April 1917 to Florence and Samuel Hoyt in the village of Conimicut, Rhode Island. He attended schools in Conimicut and graduated from Aldrich High School in nearby Warwick, Rhode Island. He received his B.A. degree from Rhode Island College of Education (now Rhode Island College). He moved west and received a M.A. degree from UC Berkeley. In 1947, he was a new junior high school teacher in Petaluma, Calif., where he met another new teacher in the same school, Jeanne Sahlin. In 1949, they were married at the First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley. They had two sons. Homer was a dedicated educator who served at all levels. He was an elementary and junior high teacher as well as an elementary and junior high school principal. He was an Assistant Superintendent in the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education and the Superintendent of the Healdsburg Elementary and High School district. He ended his career as an Associate Professor of Education at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of San Luis Obispo and served as a ruling elder there several times. He also sang with the Praise Singers and taught many adult Bible classes. He also frequently attended the First Christian Church in Morro Bay. In retirement, he was active in the California Retired Teachers Association and enjoyed golfing with his fellow Education Department friends. He was a faithful, devoted Christian and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne (Sahlin); son, John and Mary of West Hollywood and son, Kenneth and Narhiz and two grandsons, Khristian and Nathanael of San Jose.
