Dave passed away peacefully at his home in Santa Cruz on October 29th. Born and raised in San Diego, CA he grew up with the Surf Rats of Mission Beach and was nicknamed "Buck" for his chicken-like surfing style. In 1969, he moved to the then small town of Santa Cruz where he believed would be a good place to raise his children. A homebody by nature, he was content to let the rest of us explore the world, although yielding to his wife Kathy's persistence""he did see quite a bit of it. Hawaii was a near-yearly destination and the family's home in Bali became a possibility more recently. A journeyman carpenter by trade, a jack-of-all-trades, Dave also was an artist--a dynamic painter and sculptor, an avid reader, and player of chess. He rode the unicycle. David graduated from UCSC in 1985 with a BA in Fine Arts. He started the first computer lab at Soquel High School donating his time and gathering recycled computers from the com! munity. He was a teacher to his children and the community. He obtained his CA teaching credentials in 1996 and taught Special Education for several years. Dave was a compassionate and loving man. Friends remember him for his big hair and big bear hugs.
David is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kathy Rischel, daughter Hannahrose Josh, sons Zebidius Buck Christine, Mick Era, and Maxwell. Dave held his family close to his heart and was proud to be a grandfather to Mick, Jr. and Luca Tenaya. Those who will miss him include his father Bill Nevins and wife Sunnie Nevins, mother Barbara Landkamp, siblings Bobby Nevins Karen and Mindy Cross Dave, many nieces and nephews, former wife and good friend Colleen, and best friend Marvin "Muggs" McMinn.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 14th at 10:30AM at the Chapel of Villa Maria Del Mar, two houses from the beach at 19th Ave and E. CLiff Drive. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that David would want you to read the comics every morning, eat a bowl of ice cream daily, and do something to save the ocean for his grandchildren and yours.

Adieu, old friend. Back in the day --- we were all just kids when you showed up in SCruz, Colleen big with Hannahrose. Zeb’s birth in the house around the corner from me on River St. You have grown your family to include more remarkable people and you have given much. I think of you, the Buck, with your head thrown back roaring in laughter. My world is better because you walked through it. My love goes with you.

Aloha-
Hannahrose, Zebidius, Mick and Max Nevins lost their Dad on October 29. David Nevins left them much too early but hopefully he will continue to protect, respect and acknowledge his influence on his gifted and loving children. "They" say the dead don't care, but in David's case I don't think he will let that go so easily.
Sweet Dreams David, you have earned them!!! Looking forward to the celebration of your life with Kathy, kids and grandkids. Colleen
