Donald Roach Obituary

Donald F. Roach February 3, 1946 - August 22, 2011 Don Roach of Arroyo de Agua passed away peacefully on Monday August 22nd in Santa Fe, with four generations of family and close friends present during his final days. Through his life, Don gave us the gift of his unbridled wonder for the magic and mystery of the world. Fittingly, he spent his last days outside under his daughter's portal, surrounded by things he appreciated in life: the laughter of his grandsons, bird song, cricket chirp, powerful lightening storms, and the moon's wax and wane. During his life, we saw Don marvel at the hugeness of the cosmos, and during his passing we have been held by the constellation of friends and family that came together to shine light on us as he moved from this world. Don was an artist and musician, a builder, a voracious reader and researcher, and a traveler to territories unmapped and remote. He chose to live his life deliberately; he pioneered a lifestyle on the land in the pursuit of daily creativity and adventure, seeking beauty, and utilizing every medium he encountered to create form. As his best friend describes, "Don didn't just sip - he gulped life." Born in New Hampshire, Don moved to Pakistan with his parents at the age of 10, beginning a lifetime of travel and appreciation of local cultures that spanned several continents and dozens of countries. Don attended St. Paul's School and graduated Cum Laude from Harvard University. He moved to New Mexico in 1970 with his bride, Katy Power, and homesteaded on Mesa Poleo. He lived and worked in Santa Fe from the mid 70s through the early 90s. Don savored his final twenty years on Resolana Farm in Arroyo de Agua. There he built his home, planted gardens, and worked the acequias to green fields for his horses. Don's passion was painting the landscapes of northern New Mexico, especially Resolana Farm, Chama Canyon, and Chaco country. He enjoyed winters in Mexico on the Tenacatita Bay where he built two houses and introduced friends and family to the beauty of the tropics. Don was preceded in death by his father and firstborn infant daughter. He leaves behind his partner, Abigail von Schlegell, who cared for him devotedly to the end. Don is also survived by his mother, Marjorie Roach of Santa Fe; his son Jesse Roach and wife Lisa of Albuquerque; his daughter Adelma Hnasko and husband Tom of Santa Fe; his son Taylor Meier of Fort Collins, Colorado; and grandsons Xander and Cyrus Hnasko, and Coulter Roach. We ache that Don didn't live to meet his granddaughter, whose arrival to Jesse and Lisa we eagerly await in September. Don's family also includes his oldest friend, Katy Power of Santa Fe, mother of Jesse and Adelma, and Abigail's two daughters, Pace Henry of Santa Fe and Vaughan Henry of New York City. We will remember Don for his artistic mind, curious spirit, astute intellect and deep passion for life. We will continue exploring new territories in memory of the man who showed us how, savoring the exquisiteness of discovery. A memorial celebration is planned for September 4th at 4 p.m. See www.studioresolana.com for more information. An exhibition of Don's recent paintings will take place on September 30th at The Fisher Press in Santa Fe.Contributions in honor of Don Roach can be made to New Mexico School for the Arts. We are grateful to Cloud Hall and Jeannie, Archie, and Marsha of Ambercare Hospice for their gentle care of Don during the last weeks of his life. Lisbet and I were saddened by Don's passing and now we find ourselves reminiscing about the old days. Back in the early '70s we bought 10 acres from Don and Katy on Mesa Pinabetal and over the next few years got to know them well. Katy was sweet and very centered. And Don was a beautiful guy-- wild and creative. I remember his eyes were two different colors of blue-- as if he couldn't settle on just one. He had a loping gait, a sharp wit, an inventive mind... and he had that pure hippie charisma going on that attracted everyone to him. Those were the days, my friend. Rest in peace, Don.

My dearest Jesse, Adelma, and Katy,

I am so sorry to hear of Don's passing. I have so many memories of your family when Jesse and Adelma were just little ones. Don was gifted, creative, and always a presence. I was gone from Santa Fe for a long time, and returned last year. I was lucky enough to visit with Don and see is beautiful artwork at an opening last Summer. It was so great to see him!

I'm sorry I am unable to attend the memorial today, but I've just recently lost a close family member suddenly as well, and I'm just too overwhelmed. The loss of someone you love is just toop panful, no mater how it happened.

I send my love to you all on this day and hope to visit with you and share big deep hugs soon. Don will always be with you. Love is what matters most.

Many Blessings, Bonnie McClintock

I didn't know Don well -- barely, in fact. But I know he and Katy raised beautiful, talented, self-assured children. I am sorry to hear of their loss.

It seems only a few days ago, Don was painting scenes of Lamanzanilla, Mexico. I always enjoyed that special sparkle in his eye when he was describing something special. It seems too soon, for him to be gone. My condolences to his family, however far and wide.

I was sad to hear of Don passing away. I had just moved to Santa Fe back in 1979 when I met Don. I have such fond memories of my Santa Fe days and glad he was part of those days. My deepest sympathy and condolences to Don's family and friends.

I was saddened and shocked to learn that Don had passed away. I am glad I had a chance to talk to him a few months ago. When you share so many good times with someone and have many memories from so many years a large part of my life and memories of New Mexico go with him.
I would like to express my deepest sympathy and condolences to Don's family and friends.

To the family of Don Roach,

Don roomed with 2 of us who were classmates at St. Paul's School while we were at Harvard. He was very special - erudite, charming and a risk taker. It is sad to learn that he left us early in our senior citizen status. A creative genius, he was very attracted to the well educated, beautiful women of our time. I have some unique but fond memories of Don's escapades in our youth. yes, he was one of a kind.

I trust he has found peace?

To the whole Roach family our deepest condolences. Hard to imagine him gone. With his free spirit and odd sense of humor. We had many good times spent with him and our motley group of friends.

Dear Adelma,Jesse,Tom,Katy and family,
Life is funny. Just Tuesday we saw Jesse out for dinner and it sparked a brief thought in my mind as to what your Dad was up to.
It was because I recall seeing him years ago supporting his beautiful family at Prep sporting events. What a presence he was!
Please accept our heartfelt condolences and know that you are in our thoughts.
Love,
Ellyn and Rob Feldman
