Jim Cohen Obituary

JIM COHEN It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of James P. Cohen, 83, a cherished member of our Santa Fe Community. Jim fell ill while traveling abroad and passed contentedly June 2nd in Inverness, Scotland surrounded by his beloved wife of 52 years, Linda, and his only child, Richard. In addition to Linda and Richard, he is survived by his two adoring grandchildren, Ethan and Lauren. Jim was born March 29, 1935 in New York City to parents Carl and Rene. He graduated Brown University in 1957 and enlisted in the National Guard shortly after. He joined the family business, the Loma Dress Company, which once was the largest dress manufacturing business in Manhattan. After serving as president of their Carol Craig Division, he sold his shares at the age of 40 and retired to become a ceramic sculpture. Jim loved classical music and opera and served for many years on the boards of the Orchestra of Santa Fe and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, including stints as President for both. Additionally, he was on the board of Performance Santa Fe. He also was a master gardener. His home garden was featured in the book Behind Adobe Walls and was viewed regularly by the Garden Club and Santa Fe Botanical Gardens. Jim was blessed with a full cast of family and friends who loved him for his quick wit, disarming humor, soothing manner and gentle demeanor. Known as "twinkle toes" for his agility on the tennis court and dance floor, he remained active until the end. He traveled to every corner of the earth and fell ill doing the thing he loved to do. He died as he lived, with grace and dignity, and he will be missed by all who had the great pleasure of knowing him. The funeral service will be held at Congregation Beit Tikva, 2230 Old Pecos Trail, on Sunday June 10 at 1:00 PM, with an internment and meal of condolence to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Congregation Beit Tikva or a charity of your choice. Rivera Family Funerals and Cremations 417 East Rodeo Rd.
