Kim Rubin Obituary

KIM A. RUBIN Kim A. Rubin died peacefully at her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on May 16th, shortly after sunset. Kim was 72 and had fought a lengthy battle against progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). She was born in London, Ontario (Canada), but in search of work and a better life, her parents brought her to Michigan. At age eight, she and her family became U.S. citizens. She is survived by her children, Josh Rubin (Katie) of Santa Fe and Mia Napolitano (Frank) of Albuquerque, grandchildren Jalena, David, Harry, Vince and Naomi, sisters Missey and Jeri (and her siblings' beautiful families), husband Jim and beloved doggies, Wall-e and Ernie B. Kim's strong, dedicated and loving mother Hilda was her guiding light. Kim carried Hilda's strengths, values and independence throughout her life. When faced with personal, health or professional challenges, Kim's only choice was to follow in Hilda's footsteps: she persisted! Kim's zest for adventure could be masked by her more reserved nature. Following her graduation from Michigan State University, she spent a year in Europe where she managed a local business in Switzerland, almost always wore a fedora, and became a fantastic skier. After returning to the U.S. to teach elementary school in Chicago, she was introduced to Jim because of their mutual love for skiing. During more than 40 years of marriage, Jim joined her for many bump runs and aprŠs skis, journeys around the U.S. and across the world, and he supported her independent expeditions. Near the end of an epic road trip through almost every western state in 1972, Kim discovered her second true love - Santa Fe - where they settled in 1973. There was no question that Santa Fe was home, and she never, never ever looked back. Adelante! She cherished Santa Fe's sunsets, hikes and food, but her greatest enjoyment was bartering her professional expertise for art, clothing, rafting trips, massages and "gift certificates" for other local services. Kim's favorite adventure was building a family. She and Jim, both raised in dysfunctional homes, provided Josh and Mia a loving, stable and supportive home life. Kim attended every competition, encouraged her children to reach for the stars, championed their own adventures, and was ever-present during tough times. Her life's work was to support all children, and she attained multiple graduate degrees and certifications to broaden and deepen her skills. In Santa Fe, Kim began as a resource room teacher at Kearney Elementary, and then, at E.J. Martinez, she pioneered the Santa Fe Public Schools' enrichment program with Bergit Salazar. After Josh's birth, she became the Diagnostics Coordinator for SFPS to identify and support children with learning differences and for gifted programs. Later in the 1980s, she opened a family therapy practice, and as Mia grew older Kim created Rubin Educational Resources. RER was an educational consulting firm built on the full breadth of Kim's experience, and it also supported teenagers with college counseling and placements in therapeutic and traditional boarding schools. At its peak, RER's staff exceeded 15 professionals, and Kim served children across the country. Beyond family, work, skiing and travel, Kim's other passions were tennis, hiking, and her puppies. How did she manage to fit so many activities and responsibilities into a single day? She had a simple trick: she ran late! Friends learned that she should bring dessert, not hors d'oeuvres. She discovered that optimism, integrity, and an easy smile can go a long way toward getting a pass for being late. A PSP diagnosis typically comes with a 2-3-year life expectancy. Kim developed a simple plan: she persisted, only looking forward, never back. And Death also had to wait a very, very long time. Kim was just too darn busy tripling the doctors' declarations about how long she could hold off the disease. In lieu of flowers, she wished that contributions be made to CurePSP (www.psp.org) to help in the battle against neurogenerative disease, or to a local charity supporting children. Please join her family in a celebration of her life at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 28, on the grounds of the International Folk Art Museum on Museum Hill in Santa Fe.

Even after all these years following our month of friendship in Guatemala in 1977, Kim comes often to my mind. Such a strong and lovely woman. She loaned me her wristwatch which I used to pass myself during my successful solo hike up Volcán de Agua near Antigua, Guat. Later we continued our Spanish language immersion in Quetzaltenango (Xela).

I knew Kim in Guatemala for a week more than 50 years ago. She still appears in my thoughts for her joy in life which brought happiness to those around her.

I just discovered Kim's obituary when I went looking for her today after coming across letters we had exchanged in 1977. We met in Guatemala that summer in Antiguo and then spent time together in Xela (Quesaltenango) I was there in Xela with my two older children; Kim and I became fast (platonic) friends. I have thought about her often in the intervening decades. The creative and giving life the obituary sets out is just what I would have expected of her. (I met her husband to be, Jim, once at the Quesaltenango bus station, perhaps to give him a package from Kim.)

It was a good day in Santa Fe when Kim and my late mother Leda first
crossed paths. They went on to become good friends as they raised their children through bar mitzvahs and birthdays and milestones. Their joy of life and respective pride in their children enriched everyone in their families. I know Kim was a cherished friend to my Mom and Dad. I am so grateful for that friendship. My condolences to Jim, Josh and Mia and their families. May Kim's memory be a blessing.

I am so sorry to hear about Kim. Kim and Jim, you were both a fond and significant part of my life in Santa Fe, since about 1975. It was wonderful to reconnect back in when was it 2013. I am so glad that Michael got to meet Kim. Just in that brief time together, he was taken by her sweetness and determination. She had so many gifts, much of which is covered in the obituary article.
May you, Josh, Mia and all the family be comforted from your loss.
With much love and affection, Barbara Nobel Katch

Kim, it was a privilege and a true joy to meet you in April. I didn't know your life story then, but it all makes sense - your spirit shone through so beautifully. I hoped I'd get to see you again in this life, but we'll just have to meet on the other side.

All of my love to you and your family.

I'm sad to learn of Kim's passing. I know she has many family and friends who will miss her. Yet she touched so many through her vocations and avocations. I know Kim from tennis at El Gancho where she always had a smile and a great forehand volley. Rest in peace, Kim.

Dear Cousin Jim,
Thank you for this tremendous tribute to Kim's remarkable life. I met Kim in the early 1970s when I was a young teenager ... it was so exciting that my older cousin was marrying a woman with such a warm smile. Although I have not seen Kim since 1991 when the entire family gathered in Santa Fe to celebrate Josh's Bar Mitzvah and my mom's 75th birthday, I have such fond memories of that time together (second cousins Adam, Mia, and Erin playing together in your backyard) ... especially Kim's hospitality, compassion, and vibrant, infectious energy. A decade later, Kim became my email buddy, and her words were so encouraging and helpful when I was diagnosed with Spasmodic Dysphonia -- the same disorder Kim had struggled with for years.
Now that Kim's long battle with PSP is over and she is at peace, David and I pray that you, Josh and Mia find comfort in the many great memories. May God bless and strengthen your family.

What a radiant person Kim Rubin was in life and continues to be in our memories. We remember fondly those wonderful Easter egg hunts, soccer games, and other get-togethers when our kids were young. Kim helped so many students learn how to acknowledge their learning challenges and thrive confident in their unique abilities. Much love to family and friends from the Machens, who will be in Colorado on May 28.

Kim was a dear friend for almost 30 years. We spent many happy hours in the company of Kim and her family. She helped our daughter find her perfect college experience and prepared her for it. She got me out on the golf course where I developed a true love of the sport. Our lives have been enriched by knowing her and the Rubin family. So many great memories. Dwell in beauty dear Kim.

What a beautiful obituary -- i learned so much about her. As a yoga teacher here in Santa Fe, i was fortunate (we were) to have her in my class for many years. She was a bright star -- we always looked forward to seeing her in the back left on a purple mat. That was a cardinal rule -- it was "Kim's spot" . We talked often about her resiliency, determination, persistence, patience -- she was our hero. She modeled how to do life with grace and style, even as serious illness crept closer over the years. We'll be talking about her for a long time; and if one of us becomes ill, we'll look to Kim and figure out how to go forward. My heart is sad to lose her, and to quote a poet in her behalf: "I am not going to die, I am going home like a shooting star!" (-- Barbara Gage, Santa Fe Yoga Teacher.)
