Schneider, M.D.

Edward M. Schneider, M.D., 86, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia.

He was born May 12, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in Chicago. During World War II, he attended Northwestern University and graduated from the University of Cincinnati Medical School. He then became chief of medicine and Captain in the United States Army, serving on Adak in the Aleutian Islands. Upon his return in 1950 he married Jane Einstein Schneider, his wife of 51 years.

Dr. Schneider, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, was an internist and gastroenterologist. He retired from his private practice in Southern California in 1981, and moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio. Previously he maintained practices in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Bryan, Ohio; served on the faculty of the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City; served on the staff of the Miner's Memorial Hospital in McDowell, Kentucky, and Beckley, West Virginia; and was chief of clinical pharmacology for the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, New York, and Riker Laboratories in Northridge, California.

Following the death of his beloved Jane in 2001, Dr. Schneider moved from Cleveland to Charlottesville, Virginia.

Dr. Schneider is survived by two sons, Douglas A. Schneider of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Robert S. Schneider of Lexington, Massachusetts; daughter-in-law, Laura Tully; and grandson, Simon B. Schneider; a stepson, Donald E. Deutsch; a sister, Louise Sheldon, and her husband, William Sheldon; a brother-in-law, Paul Einstein, and his wife, Peggy; a nephew, David Einstein and his wife, Sandi and son, Eric; a cousin, Jeanne Epstein; his miniature poodle, Amy; and the wonderful and caring employees on the morning shift at the Expresso Italian Villa.

A memorial service will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Western Reserve (www.hospicewr.org); Hospice of the Piedmont (www.hopva.org), or the Jefferson Area Board for Aging (www.jabacares.org).
