Frank E. Greene

Frank Elmer Greene was born on March 4, 1926, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Following the death of his father in 1930, Frank and his sister Thelma moved to Redlands, California, with their mother Mary C. Olson to live with his grandfather, John Cornelius. Frank first attended school as a kindergarten student at Kingsberry School on Cajon Blvd.. Frank's family later moved to San Bernardino where he attended all the schools, including San Bernardino High School. In 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Red Skelton was in his outfit which was the 153rd field battalion. After training, Frank was later placed into the 506th Anti-aircraft Gun Battalion in which he participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima on February 19th, 1945. However, his anti-aircraft battalion did not go ashore until D plus 5. His battalion was attached to the 5th Marine Battalion. He was a gunner on a 90mm anti-aircraft gun. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, Frank worked in the train yards of the Santa Fe Railroad. Over the course of many months studying after working hours, he earned a diploma as a Mechanic from Santa Fe as part of an apprenticeship training program. On September 28, 1947, he married Laura I. Cleveland. Frank and Laura were married for 23 years and had two sons, Frank L. Greene and Anthony E. Greene. Frank was hired as a firefighter for the San Bernardino City Fire Department where he worked until he retired from the fire department. Over the course of his life, Frank has done much service for humanity and has made many friends. Frank Elmer Greene died on February 8, 2017. He will be missed. A memorial service will be held at the Riverside National Cemetery, staging area 7, on Thursday, March 9 at 2:31pm.
