Mina Pollard Obituary

Mina Brown Pollard, passed away March 16, 2019, in Charlottesville, Va. Mina is survived by children, Mina Karen (Richard), Kristin (Ray), and Alvin/Jerry (Nancy); grandchildren, Matthew and Alexander; Stepchildren, William (Judy) and Katherine; and step grandchildren, Bryan, Henry, and Wesley. She is also survived by her sister, Erma (Arthur) Carchedi. Mina was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Dr William B. Pollard, Jr. She was born as Mina Foster Brown to the late Lillian and the late Frank Brown in Baltimore, Maryland. She grew up in Washington, D.C. and attended George Washington University. She graduated with a degree in Psychology. She served in the Coast Guard as a Lieutenant during World Word II. She married Alvin G. Dulcan in 1947 and had 3 lovely children: Mina Karen in 1948, Kristin in 1950, and Alvin, Jr. in 1952. Mina and Alvin were divorced in 1968. She later married Dr. William B. Pollard, Jr. and moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. She helped raise William and Katherine Pollard. She returned to George Washington University and earned her Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. She was able to use her degree to provide Family Counseling for a few years. Mina loved to sing and had a beautiful voice. The New York Times crossword puzzle was no match for her. She played duplicate bridge every week and had a number of master points. Thanks to the staff at the Colonnades for making her last few years comfortable. We love that last of her 97 years of life were very happy with her special friend Phillip Stoddard and lots of help from Bill and Judy. I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Mina from the time my sister Nancy married her son Alvin (also known as Jerry) to her many trips to California to visit Alvin and Nancy and her grandkids. Without a doubt, Mina was a force of nature full of energy, strength and accomplished yet a kind and gentle spirit. Her baking skills were renowned as was her humor. I enjoyed our conversations and learning her opinion to various current events I really missed her when she could no longer travel to California I know her essence continues to thrive in her son, and grandkids.

I'm so glad I was able to spend a lot of time with my Aunt Mina even though I was living in Texas and then Maryland. She enjoyed seeing my mom, her baby sister, as much as she could, and also got to know my best friend, Linda, who lives in C-Ville. Thanks to Billy for driving her up and back in the rain so she could attend my mom's 90th birthday party in December. She will be missed by all of us

Mina was my bridge partner for many years! She loved the game and was a strong player, always eager to learn new concepts. She has been missed by me and all of her bridge family. The last time I visited her, she was standing beside the piano, singing. What a lovely memory!

My sincerest sympathy to your family on Mina's death. Mina was my first regular bridge partner when I moved to Charlottesville in 2011. We had many laughs at the bridge table. I appreciated Mina's dry wit, it was much like my own! It was disheartening to see her focus fade at the table as her advanced years started to show. May she Rest In Peace and bid and make all the grand slams from here on out.

Grandma Mina was always incredibly kind and smart. She loved to sing and was a pleasure to be around and speak to. She also always required me to step my grammar game up haha. She is probably one of the reasons I speak so well to this day. She raised my dad as well, who is awesome. I love her so much! I am lucky to have had such a great person as my Grandma.

Our thoughts are with her children whom she loved greatly. She was an intelligent and thoughtful woman with whom I enjoyed spending time. I only got to see her when she came to California to see Alvin and Nancy, I am Nancy's sister. We would go to the beach or she would come for a swim party at my house and we got to visit. We miss her!

My Aunt Mina was a very special lady with a big heart and a great sense of humor. I will never forget how she would often visit me at JMU during my undergrad years and take me out to lunch. I was very homesick and her kindness meant so much to me. She used to bring me alfalfa sprout seeds and showed me how to grow them so I could put them on my grilled cheese sandwiches. She always made me feel special and loved. I also loved her date and nut cream cheese sandwiches and her pecan pie. I will miss Aunt Mina very much and think of her often.

thank you for the honor of working with Mina and being able to get to know her. I loved her sense of humor, her telling me about her life and her strong resilience to things life handed her. I would go looking for her when she wasn't in her room, knowing she was visiting Phillip, only to find them both asleep in their chairs with the paper open on their laps. I would call her name and say "you were sleeping". She looked me in the eye and respond " there's nothing else to do around here" with a smile on her face. She will be missed. To you, her family, I say remember the good times that made you smile or laugh. Those moments will get you through the sad times.

During my weekly visits with Mina, on occasion, rare but always delightful, Mina would sing the refrain from an old song or two - if it was familiar I'd sing along. Never loud, never long, we just kinda "whisper sang" a few phrases and then it was done. In the earlier years, before she relied on a walker, I would extend my elbow to slowly walk with her and we would joke that we felt like a marriage procession proceeding down the aisle...and again one of us would hum the marriage tune quietly under our breath. I loved that her sense of humor was so dry and quiet and doled out in small pleasing portions. She is already sorely missed.

There are lots of thoughts that don't seem to go in an obituary. One of these simple thoughts is how good a cook she was. She made full dinners for 50 years almost every night. Some are named from the source: Broccoli Palumbo and Carchedi Clam Chowder. Many are handed down and made by Nancy: vegetable soup, Chicken Mango, and a simple spinach quiche. Some of them I never eat any more: roast beef, tongue, corned beef. But they were alway good and made with love.
