Andrew DeStefano Obituary

Andrew A. DeStefano, 87, of Pottsville, passed away on Friday at Geisinger Medical Center with his family at his side.

Born in Palo Alto, he was a son of the late Charles and Mary Shelfo DeStefano.

He graduated from Pottsville High School in 1944, and joined the Navy in support of World War II. A Fireman First Class, he served aboard the USS Aegir. He held the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the World War Two Victory Medal.

He was employed as a foreman with the former Aetna Steel Co., and later worked for the former United Metal Receptacle Corp. and the former Summit Trailers. He retired from Schoeneman Corp.

A member of the former St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Andy was a current member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville.

He was a charter member of the former Greenwood Hill Fire Company, and a member of the Navy Club, Minersville. He was well-known for his long-time participation with the honors detail of the Pottsville Joint Veterans Council.

Andy was preceded in death by two children, Josie Shappell, in 2001, and Charles "Chuck" DeStefano, in 2004; three brothers, Guiseppe, Dominic and Joseph DeStefano; and a sister, Grace Fehr.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Loreta T. Nicolo; six children, Theresa Carodiskey (Harry), Danville, Andrew DeStefano Jr. (Charlotte), Derry, N.H., Thomas DeStefano (Kari), Armagh, Mario DeStefano (Kathy), Mentor, Ohio, Patricia Agia (Michael), Leesport, and James DeStefano (Jennifer), Minersville; twenty-two grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Antoinette Wojciechowsky, Schuylkill Haven; nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call from 6 p.m. Monday and from 6 to 9 a.m. Tuesday at Dutcavich Funeral Home, 200 Sunbury St., Minersville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Patrick Church, 401 Mahantongo St., Pottsville. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hillside, Pottsville. The family prefers donations to the St. Patrick Pottsville Area Kitchen.

With our families' and our fathers' so intertwined, Andy was like another uncle to me. His hard work ethic, service to his community, and devotion to family influenced so many, myself included.
