James Davis Obituary

James Clement

Davis II

James Clement Davis II "Jim", 81, passed away at his home Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

A native of Centenary, S.C., he was the only son of Wendell and Frances Shepherd Davis. In addition to his wife of 55 years, Judith Freeman Davis (Judy), he is survived by his daughter, Virginia Davis Hayes, and his son, James Clement Davis III, both of Greenville, S.C., and three grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister, Jane Davis James of Maxton, N.C. He was predeceased by his sisters, Gwen Shepherd Davis and Ann Earle Davis Lane.

Jim was a 1961 graduate of Rains-Centenary High School, where he served as Valedictorian of his senior class and received All-Region honors as a player on the school's varsity basketball team. In 1965, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Wofford College, and a Master of Science degree in Agronomy from Clemson University in 1973.

A strong patriot, Jim proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Most of his professional career was spent in agricultural sales with Nitragin and MicroBio. He traveled extensively throughout the United States, working with major universities and businesses in the sales and marketing of agricultural inoculants. Jim received honors in his work as a salesman with expertise in the agricultural industry, and for being a well-respected and ethical man.

A staunch history buff, Jim enjoyed sharing stories and books about people and places, particularly in the South.

Jim's love of the earth and its offerings continued throughout his life. The vegetables from his summer and fall gardens were shared with many, as fruit from his fig tree in the form of homemade preserves and roasted pecans and pies from his pecan trees. The many hours he spent picking wild huckleberries at the family farm also produced cobblers in many kitchens. He appreciated the hard work and peace that came from his gardening and the happiness it brought others.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Jim received much pleasure in spending time with his family – especially in nature. Jim liked to drive down to family land and walk through fields and woodlands where he drew a sense of deep contentment and well-being. He loved bringing his family of all ages along on his outdoor adventures and sharing his appreciation of God's earth.

Jim was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion, S.C. for many years.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at First United Methodist Church, 307 E. Godbold Street, Marion, S.C., with burial following at Palmer Cemetery in Centenary, S.C. Visitation will be held at 1:00 pm, prior to the funeral service, in the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church in Marion.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 155, Marion, SC 29571, or Palmer Cemetery C/O Roy White, 1606 Ivey Drive, Marion, SC 29571.

From what I understand, Mr. Jim was not from here, but when he came, he simply wanted somewhere to belong and someone to follow. So, he started attending games at my Alma mater, Pee Dee Academy. And boy was he faithful! He was at every single game, home and away, with his paper in hand, keeping up with the points every kid scored. He would come to me during and after a game I kept stats to see if we matched. He would call me sometimes just to make sure of when and where a game was. And if it was hours away, there he would be, having come by himself, even though he didn´t have a child or grandchild playing. Multiple times we met at Shlotzkys in Florence to sit and talk PDA sports. I am saddened he is gone but he will not be forgotten by this fellow sports fan.

Great-Uncle Jim, I will miss your chicken bog and talking with you about travel. Love you!

A kind and gentle man. We shared many the hour picking huckleberries and walking the fields of his family farm. RIP Jim.
