Dr. Townsend Van Holt, 87, of Florence, South Carolina passed away on Friday, January 6, 2023 after a brief illness. Born June 9, 1935 in Raleigh, North Carolina; he was the son of the late James Oscar Holt and Marjorie Sadler Holt and was preceded in death by his older brother, James Oscar Holt, Jr. Dr. Holt attended Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh; he continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for both undergraduate and Dental School. In 1963, after a brief deployment with the U.S. Navy in Cherry Point, North Carolina, he set up his orthodontic practice in Florence, South Carolina and happily continued his career for 57 years. He was active in the community, serving in numerous organizations, including The Florence Museum, The Rotary Club, and The Chamber of Commerce. He was a champion of all things Florence. Professionally he was a member of the American Board of Orthodontics, The South Carolina Dental Association and a very proud active Tarheel alumnus. Dr. Holt, also affectionately called "TV," had many passions. He could be found at the Florence Country Club on any given day playing golf- a game he loved so much and shared with his many friends and family. He was also very artistic and enjoyed painting, sculpting and just about anything he could do with his hands- a true Renaissance Man. He is survived by his wife, Jane Holt; children Kimberley Querey (Ray) of Wilmington, DE; Townsend Van Holt, Jr of Florence, SC; and Melissa Hinton (Rob) of Charlotte, NC. Blessed with seven grandchildren: Chelsea Holt of Charleston, SC; William Holt (Nicole) of Richmond, VA; Holt Querey of New York, NY; Jack Querey of Wilmington, DE; Sanders Hinton (Taylor), Sadie Hinton, and Sumner Hinton plus one great grandchild Harper Hinton, all from Charlotte, NC. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Cain Calcutt Funeral Home with family visitation starting at 10:00 AM and followed by the service at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Florence Museum, the Florence Animal Shelter, or the organization of your choice. His contagious zest for life continues on through the smiles of so many. His smiles will last forever.
