William McGovern Obituary
EXETER — William P. McGovern, 84, of Exeter, formerly of Hampton, died peacefully on Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Exeter.
Born March 16, 1924, in Manchester, he was the fourth son of the late James and Mary (Healey) McGovern.
Bill's early education was in both Manchester and the Bronx, New York City. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire, Class of 1949, and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Central and South Pacific, including Saipan and the Marianas Islands.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary McGovern-Krukowski of Washington Crossing, Pa.; son William P. McGovern and wife Kerin of Roswell, Ga.; and grandchildren Robert and Scott Krukowski, and Connor and Regan McGovern.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Virginia M. (Kane) McGovern, who died in 1995; his son-in-law, Richard Krukowski; and his three brothers, Bob, James and John.
WE REMEMBER: An infantry officer, he was recalled for the Korean Conflict and served with the 7th Regiment of the First Cavalry Division. He had graduated from the Advanced Company of Commanders School, Fort Benning, Ga., and his decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge with Star and the Purple Heart.
Mr. McGovern founded The Profile Insurance Agency, Portsmouth, in 1960, and later merged with Blake Insurance. He concluded his long career with Chittenden Corporation in Portsmouth.
Bill was very active in business and community associations, having served on the board of directors for the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, and as treasurer and president of the Pease Honorary Squadron Commanders Association. He was a former member of the board of directors of the 100 Club at UNH. In addition, Bill was a member of the Warwick Club in Portsmouth; the Lanam Club in Andover, Mass.; the Portsmouth Elks Lodge; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Bill was an avid fan of the Red Sox, Patriots and UNH football and enjoyed golf as a member at Portsmouth, Wentworth by the Sea and Abenaqui Country Clubs.
SERVICES: Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Interment will be in Old St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
