Verna, I have so many fond memories of the work you and John did at the jail. I don't know if you recall or even knew that I first met John when I was a young Boy Scout volunteer at the First Avenue Service Center in Seattle. I don't recall much of the discussion only that he was already helping others there and who would have known our paths would have crossed a second time.
I always appreciated his counsel, particularly when they were volunteered in keeping me informed of matters. Your prayers of ensuring the facility and the people inside and out were kept safe were always a positive reassurance for me.
I recall visiting John shortly after his bypass surgery and his comments that now having such a young heart he would be good for many more years and so it came to be.
God Bless you Verna and your family, we wish you happiness and support surrounds you.

On behalf of the hundereds of officers and staff of the King County Dept of Adult and Juvenile Detention, and the thousands of those incarcerated over the years, I send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Verna and John's entire family during this most difficult time. For over 28 years, John and Verna spent countless hours with those seeking guidance and solace; bringing perspective and light to many during their darkest hours. I hope that it somehow helps to know that others are thinking of you and wishing you comfort. God speed, John... and Semper Fi!

I am Verna's oldest child and was selected to escort Mom down the aisle during the wedding ceremony. John and I had some pretty good discussions about love, life and other things that bother a young man in his early to mid 20's. We almost came to fisticuffs once on what the parameters were in our relationship. But we did work our differences out. It was during this time that we worked at the Boeing Company together.
John and I attended many sporting events together. In particular boxing. We had a local heavyweight from Renton who was doing particularly well and a young middleweight, I think, that I particularly like, His was a young redheaded fighter who looked like a Greek God in the ring. After a break in service I decided to re-enter the Army since Seattle seemed to be dying, "The last person leaving Seattle please turn out the lights." He enjoyed talking about his experiences in the Pacific Theatre during WWII and also his time during the Korean Conflict. I do know he had nightmares of his time in combat till his dying day. I am pretty sure he has reconciled those times with our Lord. God bless him.
