Maurice Freehill Obituary

Dr. Maurice F. FREEHILL Dr. Maurice F. Freehill, Professor Emeritus, College of Education, University of Washington, passed away January 27, 2012 in Spokane, WA at age 96.His wife of 62 years, Kay Freehill, was by his side. Dr. Freehill was known throughout Washington State and internationally for his life-long commitment and contributions to the educational needs of gifted children. An exceptional teacher and writer, his work was demonstrated through higher education classes, conferences and workshops, research, and consultations. In addition, he provided leadership to many boards and professional associations. He was author and co-author of four books and more than 100 articles in professional journals. Born November 29, 1915 in Chicago, IL to Irish parents Patrick and Anna Freehill, he earned his B.Ed (Political Science and English) at the University of Alberta and M.A. (Student Personnel) and Ed.D. (Educational Psychology) at Stanford University. He was a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology. He served as Professor, Education and Psychology and Director of Psychological Services and Research at Western Washington State College (1948-1961). On leave from WWSC, he was Professor and Chairman, Educational Psychology, at the University of Hawaii (1961-1962). From 1962-1986, he was Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Washington where he served as Chairman of the department for most of his tenure. This was the culmination of a remarkable career that began as a student, then teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in northern Alberta. Mauri was regarded as an excellent mentor who established enduring relationships with many grateful students. He and Kay frequently entertained former students in their home, providing stimulating discussions and support over the years. Those who had the good fortune to work or study with him will miss this true intellectual for his principles, insights and generosity. He also maintained close relationships with his extended family in Alberta and cousins in Ireland. Mauri was talented in painting, both oil and watercolor, and was an accomplished gardener. He designed and drew the blueprints for their home on Whidbey Island. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their son, Bernard J. Freehill of Renton, WA, his sister, Margaret Wheat of Marwayne, AB, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Bernard Freehill, in 2004. A memorial Mass was held on February 2, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Spokane, WA. Donations in his memory may be made to Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 2253, Spokane, WA 99210-2253. I am sending this for Dr Audrey Williams who worked along side the gifted Dr. Freehill at the UW. I know they were good friends and honored each other's giftedness.
Audrey has had Parkinson's for 13 years,diagnosed at 60 yrs of age. I will explain her friend's passing. Bonnie Brunton
