Paul Henderson Obituary

Paul Henderson III

Paul Henderson III - a Pulitzer Prize winner, crusader for justice and beloved friend and family member - died peacefully in Seattle on December 7, 2018 of lung cancer.

Paul was born January 13, 1939, in Washington, D.C. After attending Wentworth Military Academy, he joined the Army and served in Korea, where in 1960 he got his first newspaper job as a reporter for Stars and Stripes. Upon his discharge, he worked at the Council Bluffs (Iowa) Nonpareil and the Omaha World-Herald while also studying journalism at Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Omaha. In 1967 he began working at The Seattle Times, where he made a name for himself writing gritty features for which he lived among the homeless, hung with heroin addicts, drove a taxi and rode box cars with hoboes halfway across the country. As an investigative reporter, he won the Pulitzer in 1982 for a series of stories that cleared a young man who had been wrongfully convicted of rape. That accomplishment launched Paul's second career as a sought-after private investigator focusing largely on exonerating the falsely accused. In 1988 he began working on a case-by-case basis for New Jersey-based non-profit Centurion, which he joined full time in 1996. During his 25 years with Centurion, Paul's work was instrumental in helping the organization free 14 innocent people. He retired in 2013.

He is survived by his life-long partner, Janet Henderson; their sons, Peter Henderson and Brady Henderson; three daughters from his earlier marriage, Leslee Degenstein, Jill Wiltfong and Pauley Henderson; his sister Gale Lundberg; six grandchildren, Alex Fisher, Kathryn Fisher, Heather McGlynn, Brittney Stevens, Josee Farmer and Miles Henderson; and his little dog Holly.

A private service will be held. Remembrances may be sent to Centurion: centurion.org/donate

Each day as I think of my husband, I remember all the wonderful memories that Matt told me about his army days with Paul Henderson, and the other close buddies that he had during his army life. They probably are all reunited up in heaven now, making their own memories together up there. Matt spoke so well of all the adventures he had in the service with them, and I was so glad that I was able to get in touch with you, even if the timing was a little too late for our husbands to reach each other on earth. Right now, I had water pipe problems in both bathrooms, and in the process of getting 2 new bathrooms installed, and after that, I hope to go thru the photos and letters, and send you some that Paul wrote to Matt. Hope you can keep all the wonderful memories of Paul alive in your heart, as I'm trying to do with Matt, since both of our husbands are gone. Just wanted to say thank you again for answering my email, and letting me know that I was able to reach one of the 4 people that meant so much to making Matt's army days so great. Paul was a kindred spirit for Matt.

Dear Janet, so sorry to learn, late, of Paul's death. He was a man of Strength and dedication I feel honored to have know him. The Centurian
Ministries seem an Inspired choice for him; clearly. Great to hear the number of innocents that had been wrongly accused receive justice, through his efforts and those of the Ministry.

This message is for Barbara Lukowski
Hello Barbara,
This is Janet Henderson. I am so sorry you were not able to reach us while Paul was alive. I did get a call earlier in the year from a former coworker at The Seattle Times who had taken a message from, as I recall, a
legislative aide in another state who was
trying to track down Paul on behalf of the family of an old Army friend. The message did not name the friend, but surely it was from you on behalf of your husband. Please know that I did call the phone number the aide provided and left a couple messages but did not hear back. I'm so sorry I did not keep pursuing this. Please email me: [email protected]. I would love to talk to you about Paul and your husband Matt and their friendship.

Hello Barbara. This is Janet Henderson. I am so sorry you were not able to reach us while Paul was alive. I did get a call earlier in the year from a former coworker at The Seattle Times who had taken a call to the newspaper from, I believe, a legislative aide in another state who was trying to track down Paul on behalf of the family of an old Army friend. The message did not name the friend but surely it was you on behalf of your husband. I
returned the call to the aide and left messages for him but did not hear back. I am so sorry I did not keep pursuing this. Please email me. I would love to talk with you about Paul and your husband and their friendship.

My prayers goes out to Paul's family at this time, and believe it or not, I have been trying to get in touch with Paul for over a year, since my husband (Matt Lukowski) was in the army with Paul in the 60's and he asked me to try to get in touch with him and 2 others. The other 2 men I found out passed away, and my husband passed away on Jan. 18, 2018 from over 28 yrs of dialysis, 19 yrs of MDS a blood cancer, plus sepsis, and mrsa. We were married for over 52 yrs, and he spoke so well of his army buddies, and how they helped get his car out of a ditch on the army base. Plus I have photos of their army days in uniform, at the beach, and also helping with the car. I found a wedding invite of Paul's while going thru some of Matt's papers, plus photos and letters. Matt really wanted me to get in touch with him, but I was unable until I called the church where he was married at, and they gave me the name of the church he transferred to. So very sorry for your loss, and I sincerely hope that I would be able to email or talk to someone in Paul's family, since I promised Matt that I would try my best to get in touch with his buddies. Now that he passed away, I was trying to do my best since that was one of the last things that I promised to Matt. I feel so bad that Paul is gone, but would love to hear from someone, since I know that he was married twice, & Matt rec'd the 1st wedding invite, in the 1960's or 1962. At that time Matt lived in Mt Washington, Pa.
After reading all of the handwritten letters from Paul and his other buddies, I feel like I knew them well. May Paul rest in peace in heaven along with all of the army buddies, including Matt.

Pete was my friend for nearly 50 years. He was there for me through thick and thin.
