Susan Poth Obituary

Susan Day POTH On January 14th 2009, after a long battle with Carcinoid cancer, surrounded by her dearest family and friends, Susan Day Poth passed peacefully at her home in Madison Park. Sue was born on January 6th 1942 at Providence Hospital in Everett, WA. She died just eight months after the death her beloved husband Phil Poth Jr. of 40 years. Sue graduated from the UW with a degree in English literature. She grew up in Laurelhurst and attended Helen Bush and Roosevelt High Schools. After graduating, she traveled by ship to Europe and continued on her journey to visit destinations such as Istanbul and Morocco, a unique and uncommon adventure for a single woman in that era. Her father, Dr. Charles Day, a gold medal winner with the UW Crew at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, instilled in her a great love of the water. She spent the summers of her youth with her brothers and sisters on their dad's little sail boat on Hood Canal. Sue loved to swim in Lake Washington, not to mention any swimming pool. Sue's love of literature never left her and she always enjoyed reading great authors old and new. Her kitchen table always had a copy of the latest Yew Yorker or Vanity Fair magazine. Her children will miss opening their mailboxes to find a freshly clipped poem or short story attached to a friendly note. In her later years she found great joy in meeting with her book club. She was a loyal, compassionate, generous, unwavering friend. She never hesitated to spend hours listening and giving advice if you asked for it. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was able to live in the moment. We all appreciated her for that. She remained very close with several of the women from her college sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma. She loved good food a fun dinner out and a crisp martini. She transformed her passions for food and socializing into a successful catering business specializing in weddings. Nearly forty couples were married in her Capitol Hill home. As her sister-in-law said, "Sue had it all. Pretty, smart, talented, a great hostess, lots of flair, two beautiful kids who have grown into strong amazing adults. I can see her sparkling in the living room of the Poth Manor, throwing out a clever line, bringing people together with her charm....the hostess with the mostess...that was Sue." Sue fiercely loved her children Katie and Philip. The genuine closeness she enjoyed with her children over the years was truly profound. She was a second mother to many of her children's friends one of whom said of her "Sue taught me how to laugh." She is survived by her mother Marjorie Jacobson, two brothers Jeff and John Day, sister Kristin Day, son Philip Poth and daughter Katie Mulhair, son in law Dirk Mulhair, nephews Sam and Max and her two awesome grandchildren Jack and Molly Mulhair. We will all miss her very much. We love you so much Mom. A memorial celebrating her life will be held at The Seattle Golf Club 210 NW 145th, Tues., 1/27/09 @ 3:00 pm.

I miss your mom so much. I was so sad of her passing. I miss her working side by side with me like a passion. I think of her often, I miss her smile, laugh, and the wonderful times we spent together every week for the past 20yrs. Phil & Katie,
I was truly sorry to see that your mother has passed. I was trying to find a forwarding address for her and came across her obituary. If possible, could one of you contact me?

No words can express the loss all who knew Sue are now feeling. We knew her well and are enternally grateful for the experience. Many a night we were priveleged to share Poth Manor while court was in session, and the memories will never fade. The house was ebullient, loving, and always felt like home. It was an era. Rest well, beloved friend, the joy you infused in us all lives on.

Dearest Auntie Marge, Jeff, Johnny, Krisy & especially Katie & Phil,

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I have so many wonderful memories of coming up to Seattle during the summer or holidays with Jim (my grandmother Genevieve). I remember Sue could turn a rainy day into such fun! Her laugh, sense of humor and smile were infectious! I can hear her now.

Please know that I am thinking of you all and sending my deepest sympathy and warm hugs.

Love,
Kelly

Dear Sue, for me it will never be "good-bye". In Dad's (Uncle Carl's) words: "So long, 'til we meet again" & his favorite: "May flights of angels sing you to your rest". P.S. we have donated to the Carcinoid foundation in your name. Love, Jan, Joan & Kelly.

Katie and Philip:
What a beautiful tribute to your mom. I loved her so. And I am proud to have been part of one of the 40+ couples married at Poth Manor. There were so many good times with Sue and Phil. Stay strong... you guys are awesome.

Dear Kate and Phil,
I am very sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She always liked a bit of excitement and you kids always provided that and more.

I have a nice photo of your dad from when he visited one week in the snowy winter that I'll be happy to email you.

I have both notices together in my book of clippings and I'll eventually put Phil on my website, under people that have inspired me.

Love,
Spencer
