Walter Miller Obituary
Dr. Walter Miller, 92, of Seattle WA, passed away peacefully on
October 30, 2015 after complications from a fall.
He was born in Stonehaven Scotland in 1923. His medical training began at the school of Medicine, Aberdeen University, Scotland and continued at Cornell Medical College, New York City, as a Rockefeller Foundation student.
Following an internship at the University Hospital, University of Aberdeen, he served as a flight surgeon in the Royal Navy for three years. He was first stationed at Cuxhaven, Germany as part of the British occupying forces then at Royal Navy Air Station Culdrose (HMS Seahawk) in Cornwall, England.
Dr. Miller began specializing in pulmonary diseases, beginning at St Charles Hospital, London; followed by Hillingdon Hospital, London; The Chest Clinic, Uxbridge, Middlesex; and Nayland Sanatorium, Suffolk, England. It was during this time that Dr. Miller met and married his wife Rose.
The Millers immigrated to Seattle in 1955, when Dr. Miller joined the King County Health Department's Firland Sanatorium as staff physician. In 1963 he became assistant director of the Tuberculosis Clinic in Seattle and then director for Tuberculosis Control in 1971.
In addition to his work with patients at the King County Health Department, Dr. Miller was a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Washington; served as attending physician at Harborview Medical Center and a consultant for pulmonary diseases at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital. He also was on the teaching staff at Providence Medical Center and Swedish Hospital. Even in retirement, Dr. Miller continued to consult occasionally with the Health Department.
Dr. Miller was preceded in death by his brother Lawrence, and is survived by his two sisters Doreen and Ella along with many nieces and nephews.
At his request, there will be no memorial service. He will be greatly missed by all his friends, family and those who came to know him.
