Winifred Marti Wright "Winnie" Hawkes

Winifred Hawkes Obituary

Winifred "Winnie" Marti Wright HAWKES October 21st, 1912~January 4th, 2008 Born October 21st, 1912 in Ballard, as the only child of Seattle Fire Department Captain, Harry G. Wright and his wife, Lydia Rose Wright. Winnie attended Ballard High School and she was a respected volunteer at Overlake Hospital in the maternity ward. Her Father brought home the love of her life, her loving husband of seventy-three, beautiful years, Ken Hawkes of Bridalwood. Winnie became Ken's beloved bride on July 14th 1934; they made Seattle their home and began raising their two children, Larry and Judy Hawkes. In 1947 the Hawkes family moved to the Eastside and pioneered their own paradise in farmland. For the past 60 years in Bridalwood they raised horses for riding and cleared land for a new barn and expanded their home as they raised their two children in the clean harmony of country living. Known as "Winnie" to her many life long friends or "Grandma" to her family. Winnie delighted in other people's happiness; she had a very special way of making people feel welcome, accepted and remembered. She never forgot the birthday of a friend or a special occasion for her family. Winnie had a great sense of humor and made light of life. She shared her heart and her home openly, she created strong traditions through her love of family, cooking and entertaining for all her family and friends. Winnie was at her happiest when surrounded at her home by her large family around her dinner table. Our beloved Grandmother has been the foundation and Matriarch of four generations of love and devotion; she is the royalty of our family and will be missed unimaginably. She shared every bit of her true example of love and joy with us all throughout her life and for that we are truly blessed. No words can describe what this elegant, thoughtful lady meant to her family. Her husband, children, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren will continue to live with the countless memories of a wonderful life she created by her gentle grace and old-fashioned loving kindness. Winnie passed peacefully into heaven January 4th surrounded by her family. Private family services will be held at her home. The family extends grateful thanks and suggests memorials to Children's Hospital in Seattle, WA.

My dear Sara Louise, your family, and extended family: Quite by chance, I saw the notice of your beloved grandmother's passing. Heartfelt condolences go out to each of you. Though I only ever saw your grandmother in passing, I know she was a class and elegant lady. And I know your very high regard and respect for her. Cherish the memories, dear girl. And perhaps when I return from my trip in a week or so, we can share some poignant moments from this week of celebration of her special life. My love to you, dear one. UM

Memories of Winnie. They are my earliest ones as my mother, Mirth Hornschuch, went to high school with her and talked of her all the time. I first remember going swimming at a young age at Winnie's house with my brother and a friend. It seemed to me that you must be rich to own a swimming pool. I didn't even realize the first time that it was not a heated one. The water seemed warm to me. But my real awe was that Winnie had horses. Eventually when I got my own, I named it after one that I'd 'met' at Winnie's, Kheeta a terrible misspelling of a Spanish word, most likely. When I was about 15 my friend and I got to leave our horses in Winnie and Ken's pasture so we could ride in Bridle Trails, several days in a row. What a thrill. Mom and I also came out to pick wild blackberries and apples and it seemed that we were going into the country whenever we visited.
My last visit was last year when I, now 60, brought my parents, Mac, 93 and Mirth, 95 for a last visit with Winnie and Ken. Winnie will not be forgotten by the many people she touched with her humor, sparkling eyes and hospitality.
