John McMeekin Obituary

John Thomas McMeekin, age 81, of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of Warrensburg, Missouri, passed away Staurday, August 16, 2008, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, Missouri, where he had resided since April 2007.

He was born on January 14, 1927, in Warrensburg, the son of Leslie A. and Lillian (Ford) McMeekin.

John lived most of his life in Warrensburg and Sedalia, Missouri., graduating from Warrensburg Hig School in 1944 and from Central Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1956.  He entered the service in 1944 serving in the U.S. Naval Reserve and as a Merchant Marine in the Coast Guard. Returning  to Warrensburg in 1947, he was associated with McMeekin Furniture Store.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.  John was active in Boy Scout Troop 400, was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Tribe of the Mic-O-Say, and a scoutmaster.

John was also a charter member of the Warrensburg Jaycees and served as president.  He was also on the board of Chamber of Commerce and Warrensburg Country Club and was president of the Warrensburg development Corporation.  He belonged to Elks Lodge 673 for 57 years and also belonged to the George A. Whiteman American Legion Post 642, Moose Lodge, V.F.W., and Heart of America Chapter American Merchant Marine Veterans.

Survivors include his daughter, Barbara McMeekin of Springfield; his son and daughter-in-law, Beau and Jenny McMeekin, and grandsons, David and Logan McMeekin, all of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters Dorothy McMeekin of Warrensburg and sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Pete Weitzel of Ballwin, Missouri; and three nephews, Steve, Mark and Dave Weitzel and families.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2008, at the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg.

The Reverend Dr. Sally Haynes will be officiating.

Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery in Warrensburg.  Full military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 131 and VFW Post 2513 of Warrensburg.

The family will receive friends on Thursday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scout Troop 400 in Warrensburg or the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon and may be left at the funeral home.
