Seth Wagenknecht Obituary

Seth Alan Wagenknecht, 57, of Sedalia, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at his parent's home in Sedalia after battling the scourge that is cancer for more than two years. His grace, courage and humility during his last two years are his final gift to us.

Seth loved to travel, but his real passion was people. He loved to share stories and to listen to stories –  stories from a stranger on an open freight car on a train across America, stories with his childhood friends, and stories shared with patrons at the movie theater that he managed.

No matter the background or the environment, Seth always could make a new friend. He had the unique gift that when you and he were conversing, no matter how many people were in the room, he made you feel you were the only one present – someone special.

Part of that gift for making strangers into friends was his twinkle in his eyes and the smile he shared. You knew he loved life and people. Whether he was riding a motorcycle across America and up Pikes Peak, or hiking the Pacific Crest trail or mentoring the dozens of young employees at the Galaxy Movie Theater in Sedalia, Seth lived in the moment.

He was also incredibly curious. What would it be like to cross the US Border between Mexico by walking across the Rio Grande? Why not take a train behind the Iron Curtain without knowing a single person. A midnight stranger in the Warsaw, Poland train station invited Seth to his parents' home to sleep because the Youth Hostel was closed. They became lifelong friends.

He was born October 17, 1955, in Kansas City, MO, the eldest child of John C. and Margie Ghosen Wagenknecht. Seth was a 1973 graduate of Smith-Cotton High School and earned a Bachelors degree in education from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield where he managed an apartment complex.

He lived in Chicago for four years, where he was a floor commodity trader. In 1989 he moved back to Sedalia to run the State Fair Cinemas. In 1998, Seth built the Galaxy Cinemas, in partnership with his mother Margie and father John, and was the manager until his passing.

Surviving are his parents, John and Margie Wagenknecht, of Sedalia; a sister, Janie Dunn-Rankin, and her husband, David, of Venice, Fla.; a brother, Drew Wagenknecht, of Smithton; and two nieces, Sarah Dunn-Rankin, of Sunnyvale, Cal., and Rachel Dunn-Rankin, of Memphis, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Millard and Frances Wagenknecht; and his maternal grandparents, Joe and Mercedes Ghosen.

Seth was a lifelong member of Calvary Episcopal Church where the funeral services will be held, Saturday at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. Carl Siegel and the Rev. Harv Sanders officiating.

Casket bearers will be Chuck Leftwich, Bob Lamberth, Leonard Anderson, Steve Glass, Danny Miller, and Mike Fisher.

Entombment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Heckart Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Calvary Episcopal Church, Bothwell Foundation Cancer Fund, or the Sedalia School Foundation with a notation that the gift is in memory of Seth Wagenknecht.

Condolences may be offered at www.heckartfuneralhome.com.

Seth, with his love of people and intense curiosity, has passed on to the other side where no doubt, he is sharing stories with his new friends.

Seth was a great friend. I always enjoyed our wide range of conversations. I will miss comparing notes about the different places we traveled to and the interesting people met along the way. Seth always had a warm smile, a twinkle in his eye, compassion in his heart and a good story to tell. I hope that heaven has a kitchen table for you to sit around with friends and family that traveled on before you. My family and I will miss you and your smile, see you on the other side.

So sorry we couldn't make it to Seth's services. We always enjoyed sharing stories and jokes with him. A very kind man with that same mischievous twinkle like his Dad. He shall be missed by many. Wishing you peace and wonderful memories. Chuck and Sherry Kempton

I grew up loving movies and always wanted to see them. So when I was 15 and a half I asked him for a job. He said wait until you are 16. I took that as "your hired in 6 months". So on my 16th birthday I marched up to him and said "when do I start?" He had quite a surprised look on his face at this demand, and then he hired me. Years later he said that was the only time somebody ever demanded a job from him.

Seth, I am truly going to miss you. You are an inspiration for my travels, a kind ear, and a great friend. The world is now a sadder place without you in it. My only hope is God gives you enough some comfortable shoes and a blanket when you need it so you can continue to travel and inspire in the afterlife.

To the Wagenknecht:
We are so soory for your loss! The description of Seth in his obituary was exactly what we experienced each time we saw him at the movie theater. He went out of his way to say hello and we so enjoyed speaking to him and to his Dad and Mom. We will keep you in our prayers.

Seth introduced me to my first boyfriend when I was 15. The relationship only lasted 2 months but the friendship I had with Seth lasted over 15 years. He was a very good friend and I will miss him and his smile a great deal. Rest in peace, Movie Dude.

We are so sorry to hear Seth has passed. He has been in my prayers for some time. God does answer prayers, sometimes it is to heal them in heaven. We just have to remember that he is no longer in pain and in the loving arms of Jesus Christ. The Wagenknecht family is in our prayers also. He will be missed, always a smiling face where ever he sees you.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wagenknecht,
I got to know Seth when I worked at I-Land Internet Service. I would always make a point to stop and chat with him any time I would go see a movie. Your son Seth was one of the nicest people I've ever met. I will miss chatting with him.

I worked at the State Fair 4 Cinemas, and Seth was a great manager and a great person in general. Every time he saw me at the new Galaxy theater, he would take time to say hello and ask how things were going. He had a genuine interest in people, and loved hearing their stories as much as he loved telling his own. He fought such a hard fight against cancer, and I am saddened by his eventual loss to it. However, his life was a victory, and those victories live on within the vast numbers of people that have had the good fortune to know him and his family.

The first Halloween after Galaxy opened I came to work dressed as Seth. Shaved a shoehorn into my hair, put on my brightest striped oxford and went about talking to moviegoers with all his stories I could remember. It was a blast. He was such a good friend. I really do wish I was more like him.
