Vernon Holtzen Obituary

Vernon Edwin Holtzen, 70, of Cole Camp, died Monday, August 4, 2008, at his home. He was born on July 4, 1938, at Lake Creek, a son of Edwin and Viola (Jagels) Holtzen.

He was born and raised northeast of Cole Camp at Lake Creek on the family farm that was homesteaded by his great-grandparents, David and Wilhelmina Holtzen. He attended grade school at Lake Creek and graduated high school from the Benton County R-1 in Cole Camp.

On January 11, 1964, he was united in marriage to Sandra Mabe and this union was blessed with two children, Kurtis Lane and Hayley Dawn.

He moved to Pocatello, ID, where he was a dock worker at Garrett Freightliners for 25 years.

On July 20, 1974, in Pocatello, Idaho, he was united in marriage to his soul mate, Margo K. Lundquist and her daughter, Kathy.  In 1982, he moved back to Cole Camp.

He was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, rural Cole Camp, and served as trustee, treasurer, and elder. He was a dairy and crop farmer and later raised beef cattle.

Until his retirement in August of 2002, he was a custodian at the Cole Camp R-1 School. He served his country honorably in the United States Army National Guard during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Era. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, and being with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Margo Holtzen of the home; his mother, Viola Holtzen of Cole Camp; two daughters, Hayley Dawn Orcutt and husband Eric of Rigby, ID, and Kathy Harms and husband Darryl Mac of Cole Camp; one son, Kurtis Lane Holtzen and wife Sheri of Cole Camp; two sisters, Lois Gray and husband R. D. of Hughesville and Ruth Balke and husband Richard W. of Cole Camp; one brother, Donald Holtzen and wife Charlene of Cole Camp; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Holtzen.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2008, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, rural Cole Camp, with Rev. Todd Kollbaum officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery, rural Cole Camp with military rites to be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 305 of Cole Camp.

A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 8, 2008, at the Fox Funeral Home in Cole Camp, with visitation to follow.

The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Benton County Hospice, or Burkitt's Lymphoma Research in care of the Fox Funeral Home, Cole Camp.

Pallbearers will be Marcus Harms, David Holtzen, Donald Holtzen, Jonathan Holtzen, Randy Fisher, Harry Gene Balke, Justin Balke, Orlyn Eckhoff, Les Gray and Darrel Holtzen.

Vernon’s unique combination of gentle demeanor and strong will made him person who was admired by many. Although he was a quiet person, he didn't let anyone push him around! And everyone I know loved and respected Vernon, especially me. We will miss him tremendously.
Our thoughts are with his family as you work through this difficult time. Let the peace of God warm your hearts as you remember all those that Vernon has been reunited with in Heaven.
