1930 - 2016
Charles Hege "Chuck" Sayler left us on November 25th after a battle with cancer. Chuck is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Anne Sayler, nephew Peter Quartaroli (Michele Perlmutter), niece Geni Quartaroli, niece Amy Quartaroli Loskutoff (Nate Loskutoff), grand nephews Enzo Quartaroli, Jake and Rocco Loskutoff. Chuck was the brother-in-law to the late Peter Quartaroli and Jeanette Raffo Quartaroli. He was the son of the late Mildred Hege Sayler and Charles Hollis Sayler and Charles' wife Myrle Hart Sayler. Born in San Jose in 1930, and reared in Los Gatos, he graduated Los Gatos High, and went on to graduate from Stanford University with a degree in Geology while lettering in gymnastics and diving. During his time at Stanford he served in the US Navy and later pursued his post-graduate degree in Meteorology from San Jose State University. He began his career at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) working at San Francisco International Airport. He went on to work in Alaska, Redwood City and Fremont in air traffic control centers. In 1968 he married Mary Anne Quartaroli of San Mateo and in 1969 they became residents of Woodside and made a lifelong home there in his beloved redwoods. Chuck was an avid mountain climber, skier, pilot, sailor, Doberman lover and fan of banjo music. Among his many outstanding accomplishments, Chuck was one of the first 100 to climb Denali (then Mt. McKinley), landed his plane on a plateau in Glenn Canyon and treasured raising champion Dobermans all his adult life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A small, private memorial was held by his family. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Mary Anne, I just learned of Chuck's passing and I am so sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of the stories you would tell me about Chuck's adventures and your dogs. I wish their were more words I could say or perhaps better words that would ease your loss. John and I still talk about how wonderful you two were to us back so many years ago. I miss you and will keep you and Chuck in my prayers.
