I´m aging and so sometimes I look back for names of guys I knew in the Navy. Google search worked, there was Don Dostal. I met him, Aug-1965, in boot camp, NAS Pensacola. He and I were bunked in the same quarters. It was apparent he had a certain maturity, an understanding of military ways that I lacked. I recall when he presided over a lesson in spit-shining shoes. Until now I did not know of his prior military service, but that explains things. Don was the smartest guy in our group and always a friend to everyone. There is more to his story.

Just learned of Don's passing. I was a friend of Mark's growing up, in his scout troop. I spent many campouts with Mark and Don, he was a character to say the least. He was a lot of fun, and we learned a lot from him. I hope he is at peace now that he and Mark are reunited.

Don was a great neighbor. He asked about our kids whenever we bumped into him. He offered to lend me tools every time he saw me working on something and he helped me replace a fence between our yards. We was a kind man and we will miss him.

To the Dostal family:
It was very sad news to hear that such a gentleman had passed. Donald and all the Dostals have always had a special place in our hearts since as far back as we can remember.
I can still see Donald in his blue Dostal Reunion T-Shirt at 196 as he asked Christopher, Paul, Stevie and Louis "Hey, Which One Are You?" I picture him having "Just One More" from the cooler or talking about eating a mayonnaise sandwich with Elizabeth in Florence's kitchen. I can hear Donald telling John they would go "wet a line" at the local fishing hole. I remember him asking Alice how the crops were doing in Sunderland. I can still see his amazing smile as he listed to Peter tell just one more story! Donald once showed us the "real California" when Michael, John and I drove out to see Donald, Elizabeth and Peter in John's Toyota. He helped us load 20 cases of Coors into John's truck to bring back to Massachusetts before we headed to his ski lodge in Tahoe. It was our first west coast experience.
Michael, who Donald called "the other brother", shares these thoughts: "I have known the Dostal family for more than 50 years since I met John in the 7th grade. They have always been family to me and they always made me feel that way. I saw every one of the Dostals a little at a time because they were so spread out across the country. Every one of them had an impact on me. Donald was a character and a kind-hearted individual. He was a great fisherman. I will miss Donald and he will always be part of me. Heaven will be a better place with him there."
Our sympathy goes out to all the Dostals for this heart-breaking loss. With love and "just one more" forever...

I was in VAK-308 in Alameda when Don was CO of VAK-208. I remember doing a European trip with him when both our squadrons provided A-3 tankers to take fighters across the Atlantic and then to participate in a NATO exercise. He was a positive leader, always glass half full, with a very can-do approach. I will remember him as a friend and an able leader of people.

Don was also an alumnus of Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, MA. He came to the HCC campus once during my tenure as the director of alumni relations. We spent an afternoon walking the campus and with him sharing stories about his early life in Northampton. I will remember his warm and open manner. My thoughts and prayers go out to family members and friends who will miss Don.

My memories of Donald (AKA Duckels) go back a long time, to Baystate.
I have some great memories of Donald mostly as young men just getting started in life. That was a lifetime ago. My condolences to all of the Dostal family and here's to good memories that will always be there.

We knew Don from St. Stephens. He was a very kind gentleman with an amazing zest for life and selfless dedication working with others.
We also thank him for his service to our country in the armed forces.

Don and I go way back nearly 40 + years ago when we shared ownership of a ski chalet in Alpine Meadows, CA. He and I, family members and others spent much time there hiking and fishing in the summer and skiing in winter. Don was an accomplished expert downhill skier who relished the bumps'. His son Mark would try to keep up with his dad and fellow great friend, Fred Schmidt. I always was envious of their skills and could never match their level. Don never made fun of my lesser skills even if I was older (two weeks) than him. We enjoyed many years in that cabin including getting snowed in on occasion! We fished in the Truckee River and listened to vinyl records in the cabin playing over and over, Put another log on the fire. We sort of raced each other to the top of White Mtn with the Boy Scouts with his son Mark and my son Justin. Don was one strong tough Dude and one guy who I had trouble maintaining pace with while jogging in the Sierra's. I always felt a bond with Don, being essentially the same age, both of us from Massachusetts and both military veterans. I won't hold it against him since he was Navy and I was Air Force! We've all lost a tremendous guy and Don will never be forgotten. I hope to meet him and Mark someday and fly together, forever! Love you Amigo, RIP my friend.

It has been many years since I've spoken with Don, and sadly I think the last time I saw Don was at his son Mark's funeral at the USAF Academy.
My parents knew Don and Shirley years before I was even born, and they were a fixture in my life always.
I regret not being able to fish with Don later in life, but I fondly recall fishing with him in the deep backcountry of Yosemite, as well as early morning milk run' tram rides in blowing snow conditions at Squaw Valley. Or my favorite, the collective family lunches in the sunshine on the rocks alongside the Riviera run. So many fun days and memories.
Don will certainly be missed, but any pain he endured is now gone.

Don was a friend and a fellow Vietnam Veteran. Always a fun guy with that grin that made you wonder what he was up to! I miss him now and always will.
