George Yano Obituary

George Masashi Yano
January 21, 1924 - March 31, 2023
George Masashi Yano was born January 21, 1924 to Hachiro and Kikuno Yano in San Francisco, California and passed away peacefully on March 31, 2023 in Montara, California at the age of 99.
George was the youngest of seven children. During World War II, his family was interned at the Topaz Relocation Center in Utah. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1946 and served in the decorated 442nd Regimental Combat Team. After the war, George returned to San Francisco where he met his future bride ("the love of his life") Cora "Asa" Mizota. They wed in 1951 and were happily married for 69 years.
George and Asa lived in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and eventually moved their growing family to Daly City, California in 1958. George was well known for his smile, happy disposition, and stories. He was a dedicated family man - a perfect day for him was getting together with family and having a good meal. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
George is survived by his loving family: son Ricky (Elizabeth) Yano, daughters Karrie Yano, Cheryl Yano, and Lori (Mark) O'Connell, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Asa, his parents, and his six siblings: Hiromu (Yoshie) Yano, Arthur (Rose) Yano, Lee (Kiyoko) Yano, Mary (Frank) Kamiya, Francis "John" (Peggy) Yano, and Warren (Misao) Yano.
At his request, no memorial service will be held. In lieu of koden or flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of one's choice.

Written with admiration for a gentleman I never met. Having attended school with the children of the 442nd All Nisei Battalion (who fought for our country while their families were interned) is enough to make me want to say "Thank You for your LOYALTY & service to OUR country!" RIP Patriotic Hero!

I considered George to be my best friend for an 8 year period from the time we were in George Peabody Grammar School, Roosevelt Junior High, and George Washington High School. This was all changed by
12/07/1941. WW 2 Started and George and I were going to graduate high school in June 1942. The Yano family was sent to Topaz. George was not able to graduate with his class. He was able to graduate after the war. The next time I saw George was at Camp Selby, Miss. when we were in the Army. I think Warren was with him. I ended up in the battle for Okinawa. While George was with the 442nd fighting in Europe. So WW 2 caused us to lose track with each other.
